The Gamesome Mac's Server Gets Upgraded
2:43 PM | Sean Smith | Comment on this story

MacRadio.com, the network that hosts The Gamesome Mac, the weekly Mac gaming radio program, began the switch to a new Xserve and a new server facility this weekend. Since the move is taking a little longer than expected, The Gamesome Mac will not broadcast live tonight.

Once MacRadio's servers are back up and their new IP addresses have propagated through the domain name system, you'll be able to listen to archives of any of The Gamesome Mac's past broadcasts at the program's web page.

Join hosts Sean Smith and Omaha Sternberg next Monday, January 27, from 6 to 8 pm Pacific Time (Tuesday, 0200 UTC) when they interview Jeff Tunnell, founder of Dynamix and GarageGames.

IMG Previews Harry Potter: Chamber of Secrets
1:27 PM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

Inside Mac games has posted a preview of Aspyr's upcoming action-adventure game, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Although the first Harry Potter game was a bit of a disappointment, the second game promises to be a whole lot better.

Here's a clip from the preview:

As in the first game, HPCS is very much a 3rd person platformer. Harry spends a lot of time running, jumping, and climbing as he works his way through various levels, while the camera hovers just behind his head, similar to games such as Tomb Raider. In a nod to the younger crowd, the control scheme is simplified to the point where Harry can simply run into most obstacles in order to climb over them, and grabbing a faraway ledge is as simple as running and jumping at it.

Of course, being of the wizardly persuasion, Harry also has plenty of spells at his disposal. As he's no longer a rank novice, he starts the game fully equipped with several spells that players of the first game should remember, such as Flipendo and Lumos. Spellcasting is accomplished by holding down the mouse button and moving the resulting cursor around the screen. If there's something that Harry can cast a spell on or at, a graphic icon unique to a spell will appear, and releasing the mouse button causes the spell to be cast.

If you're a fan of Harry Potter, be sure to check out the entire preview.

8:35 AM | Lucian Fong | Comment on this story

After the story broke in the January 2003 issue of MacWorld, Westlake Interactive has formally announced that they are porting Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003 to the Mac. Tiger Woods 2003 is a realistic golf simulation that includes 12 accurately modeled professional golf courses, real weather effects, real players, and a career mode where you can hone your skills.

Lead programmer Ken Cobb commented on the project in Westlake's press release:

"We're very excited to bring Tiger to the Mac. This is a terrific golf game, with beautifully rendered courses and excellent physics simulation. It also features motion-captured animation, even including special 'reaction' animations for Tiger, such as his famous 'fist pump'. The Macintosh version will work under both OS9 and OS X, and take full advantage of the latest Jaguar OpenGL features. It will include Mac-to-Mac network play and support for GameRanger."
For more information on Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003, visit EA's official website and watch for publisher Aspyr Media to have a mini-site soon.

Westlake also announced today that Dungeon Siege has entered beta testing. Project lead Phil Sulak hopes to have the game ready for approvals "within a few weeks". The hack and slash 3D role-playing game will be published by Bold Games.

6:00 AM | Andy Largent | Comment on this story

BioWare has again updated their Mac Neverwinter Nights page with the lastest status on the port of their popular 3D Role-Playing Game. This latest news gives good word about the progress of the title, noting they are not just fixing bugs, but also preparing packaging for the Mac version. Here's the word:

While bug fixing on the code side of the Mac version continues, work on packaging issues has begun. There are a number of issues that need addressing, including such things as where to print the CD Keys, various manual issues, number of install disks, install disk packaging, system requirements, installer issues, box art, licensing logos.... The list goes on.
In addition to the update, they also have posted a small list of Frequently Asked Questions concerning issues like a timeline for the upcoming demo (none yet), file and server compatibility across platforms, as well as the possibility of seeing future BioWare expansions on the Mac. Here are a couple excerpts:
Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide & XP2 for Mac:
The decision to publish Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide & XP2 for Mac is up to MacSoft and it would be inappropriate to comment on this topic at this time.

Neverwinter Nights Mac Client Update and Beta Release Timing:
Neverwinter Nights Mac Client Updates and Betas will be released at the same time as the Window version Updates and Betas, barring any unforseen Ninja attacks.

We'll be on the lookout for any future updates from BioWare or MacSoft, so stay tuned.
