Delta Tao Releases Spaceward Ho! 5
8:36 AM | Sean Smith | Comment on this story

Spaceward Ho! 5, the long-awaited Internet-enabled version of Delta Tao Software's humorous, award-winning game of galactic conquest, is complete.

The turn-based strategy game of galactic exploration, resource management, and conquest was one of the first networkable Mac games, making its debut in 1990. Over the years, the game's unique sense of humor and its balance of exploration and low-maintenance resource management has earned Spaceward Ho! a much-loved place in the hearts of Mac gamers.

Headlining the list of new features in version 5 is spacewardho.net, Delta Tao's free TCP/IP-based multiplayer service, replacing the File Sharing-based networking of past versions.

Here's more from Delta Tao's web site:

Spaceward Ho! is a strategic game of awesome scope. You control the entire military and economy of a spacefaring race. Your goal: explore and colonize the galaxy.

Unfortunately, you are not alone. Alien enemies bent on galactic conquest will oppose your expansion. You fight them by developing new technologies and expanding your empire, or you can ally with them to turn enemies into friends.

Terraform newly discovered worlds or mine their natural resources. Maneuver your starship fleets, both in defense of your own systems and in offensive strikes against the evil aliens. Your strategic decisions will determine the fate of the galaxy....

The new version 5 is better than ever, with free Internet play on spacewardho.net, combined fleets, new battle options, an all-new user interface, and much more.

Spaceward Ho! has won a number of awards over the years, including a place in the Macworld Game Hall of Fame.

For much more information on Spaceward Ho! 5, listen to this week's broadcast of The Gamesome Mac, the weekly Mac gaming radio show, which features Joe Williams, president of Delta Tao and the game's programmer.

Spaceward Ho! 5 has been Carbonized to run natively on Mac OS 8.6 through Mac OS X. The game is available for download from our sister site, Macgamefiles.com, and will operate in demo mode until a serial number is purchased from Delta Tao's web site for $40 (an upgrade for registered owners of version 4 costs $30).

    Status Update from GarageGames
9:04 AM | Andy Largent | Comment on this story

HomeLan Fed has posted a new article talking with Mark Frohnmayer of GarageGames, giving a nice status update about how this game engine technology company is doing. GarageGames licenses the powerful 3D engine behind Tribes 2 called Torque for a low cost of $100 to would-be game developers, and they recently hosted and Independent Games Festival last month. Mac users can be glad to know Torque is completely cross-platform for both OS 9 and X.

In the interview, Frohnmayer speaks to their expectations for Torque, the results of the Indie Games Festival, as well as their own Torque-based project Realm Wars:

HomeLAN - What can you tell us about the next public release of Realm Wars and what will it contain?

Mark Frohnmayer - We just finished off the second release build for Realm Wars which signifigantly improves upon what people were seeing in the first release that was done. There are a lot of new features in this build but some of the more signifigant features that people will appreciate includes: The Elf sorceress character, Joel's awesome music, OGG Vorbis support for audio, CTF game mode, Team support, a really cool foliage system based on the work of Melv May, and a few new levels.

If you've been following the progress of GarageGames or are interested to see how the company is doing, be sure to head over and give the rest of the interview a read. Stay tuned to IMG as Mac-compatible Torque games begin getting released over the coming months.

Jeff Vogel of Spiderweb Software has again updated the company's latest RPG title Avernum 3, fixing a number of issues for those running the game under Mac OS X. Version 1.1.3 makes a number of changes to the carbonized application, though users of Mac OS 9 will probably not need the upgrade.

To download Avernum 3 1.1.3, head over to the Avernum site now. At the moment there is no seperate patch provided, so the full game requires a 12MB download.

Special Offer for WWII Online Mac Beta Users
8:36 AM | Galen Wiley | Comment on this story

Playnet has announced that they will be holding a special offer to Mac gamers who participated in their WWII Online Mac Edition Open Beta this past summer. Participants are being granted a free activation key that will allow them to continue playing World War II Online without having to purchase the $35.99 retail copy of the game. The $12.99 monthly fee, however, will still be in required.

Here's an excerpt from the announcement:

Due to on-going product availability problems with the retail release of WWII Online Macintosh Edition we have created premium subscriptions with associated CD keys for ALL MACINTOSH BETA ACCOUNT HOLDERS.
Beta subscribers should receive an email in their inbox with further instructions on how to activate the free offer. On Thursday, December 20, Mac beta accounts will no longer be able to connect to PlayNet servers, so be sure to take advantage of this limited time offer before then. For more information about WWII Online, you can check out the various links attached to the bottom of this article.

    Iconolexis - Full Version Released
8:36 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

As promised by Nexus in an earlier announcement, the full version of their unique puzzle title Iconolexis is now available. Previously only available for the Mac in demo form, those looking to either continuously make their way through the game or wish to compete online at the "Great Wall of Icons" can now do so.

Somewhat difficult to describe, Iconolexis challenges players to create word chains using both icons and letters:

Your mission is simple. Create a chain of words using commom letters in words to reach the next level of difficulty. How you complete your mission is up to you. Will you take your chances at teleporting from block to block, or will you use your association skills to master each level?
Those looking for more information, downloads, or online purchasing can find all at Nexus's Iconolexis site.
