Mac Warcraft III Demo Released

This afternoon, Blizzard released a Macintosh demo of the best-selling roleplaying strategy game, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. The demo contains a two mission tutorial and three new missions not found in the full version of the game. You can also play on Battle.net with other demo users. The system requirements for the demo are as follows:

• Mac OS 9.0 or higher/Mac OS X 10.1.3 or higher
• 400 MHz G3 or better
• 128 MB RAM
• 16 MB ATI or NVIDIA video card or better
• 120 MB HD space
The demo is approximately 105 MB in size and the Blizzard servers are currently overloaded. We'll be sure to post more mirrors as they become available.

Update: Rob Barris of Blizzard posted a note in our forums saying that the demo archive is "broken." According to Barris, it will be fixed "within a couple of days."

IMG Posts Slacker's Guide Part 7

IMG's resident Slacker, Chris Barylick has again stepped up to the plate to deliver info on some of today's best shareware titles in his Slacker's Guide to Shareware Gaming Part 7. In this edition, Chris discusses great shareware for this holiday season.

Unexpected, completely out of left field and perhaps sporting one of the coolest names the Slacker’s seen in a long time, Franz Keller’s Mobius Whale Wars has turned out to be a welcome way to kill a few minutes at a shot. Anime meets the Socialist Worker meets Powerpuff Girls in terms of art; the game is unlike anything you’ve ever seen, the graphics burning their way through your frontal lobe and nesting comfortably in some long-forgotten section of your brain that tells you to pursue a mate with the longest tail, shiniest fur and lowest number of insects crawling across their back. Bright, strange, obscure, irreverent and packed to the brim with eye candy such as logos, kanji and inside jokes, the game has set out to make itself memorable and succeeded.

American McGee Talks Oz

Gamershell recently got a chance to sit down and talk with former id Software employee and current Creative Director at Carbon6, American McGee. Most people will recognize him as the creative force behind the game Alice. American Mcgee and Carbon6 are currently in the early stages of creating a game based on the world of Oz. Although not giving any real solid detail on the upcoming game, the interview does cover some interesting information.

Here's a preview:

GS: Did you achieve all of your personal goals with Alice? If so have you tried to 'up the bar' for OZ?

AM: Alice is something that everyone who worked on it should be proud of. personally I am very pleased with it, although I can always find aspects of it that I wish had been done differently. with oz I’m taking the lessons learned on Alice and applying them to (hopefully) create a better game.

GS: Very little is known about OZ. Can you give us Carbon6s reasons for keeping most of the details about the game 'Under-Wraps'?

AM: We're only a couple of months into production at this point. releasing more information would be a disservice to the game and to it's potential audience.

GS: What is the timeline of the game, in relation to the OZ novels?

AM: It takes place before the adventures told of in the books.

iDevGames Posts Black Cube Post-Mortem

Two days after Macintosh gaming resource iDevGames announced the winners of their annual uDevGame game design contest, iDevGames has posted a post-mortem Black Cube, one of this year's top contest entries.

The article, penned by designer, programmer, IMG contributor and mentor Matt Diamond, covers the good, the bad, and the occasionally ugly side of learning how to program games for the Mac:

When the uDevGame 2002 contest was announced I told myself that I didn't have time to write a full game in three months, but a voice in my head kept telling me to try. After three days of internal debate I caved in and began to work on Black Cube. My goals were to develop it using only inexpensive or free tools, to learn OpenGL, and to deliver a completely finished game by the deadline (I didn't want players to think, "That was a fun demo, it'll be really nice once he finishes it.") Also, the knowledge that I would never have to work on it again after three months was a powerful incentive to keep pounding away at it. I kept telling myself, "Just think, once you finish this you can go back to playing Warcraft III..."
Black Cube, which won the runner-up prize in the Best Originality category, is a logic and deduction game for Mac OS X. Matt's version puts a twist on the classic "Black Box" logic game by extracting the playing field into three dimensions. Black Cube also offers the original 2D version of the game for players wanting to try the title in its original form.

Similar to the old computer classic Minesweeper, the object of the game is to find hidden pockets of dark matter within the playing board. You find the pockets by firing rays into the board, watching where they come out again, and deducting the positioning of the pockets through the game's refraction rules. Once you've guessed the position of the dark matter, you submit your guesses to the computer which then scores your performance.

NASCAR Racing 2002 System Reqs Updated

Aspyr Media wrote in this morning with more information on the recently announced title NASCAR Racing 2002 Season. They've given the system requirements for the game as well as letting us know the official Mac site will be available later today. Here are the miminum requirements for the game:

  • Mac OS X only
  • 256MB of Memory
  • G4 processor at 733 MHz or faster (Dual Processors supported, 500Mhz x2 or above)
  • 4X CD-ROM (16X recommended)
  • Hard Drive, with 665 MB minimum free space
  • 3D Graphic Acceleration or better ((ATI Radeon/NVidia GeForce2 or faster, MX series not supported)


    Multiplayer Requirements:

  • Internet and LAN (TCP/IP) play supported
  • Internet play requires a 56 Kbps or faster
Duane Johnson, the Westlake Interactive programmer who did the port, has commented in the IMG forums for those with concerns on the requirements. Westlake president Glenda Adams also sends word the GeForce2 MX cards are playable with the game, and she expects to see the requirements updated again to reflect the fact:
The game definitely DOES work on GeForce2mx/4mx cards. I've been playing it on several 733/2mx's and iMacs and it looks perfectly fine.
Chris Silman at Aspyr also informed IMG the multiplayer is Mac-only, for those who were curious. Aspyr is looking into porting the PC demo of the game as well, but acccording to Silman it "is still to be determined."

Freeverse offers MontyMail Newsletter

Freeverse Software, maker of titles such as WingNuts and 3D Hearts Deluxe, has decided to start offering two types of newsletters to the community. Designed to replace their current mailing list, the newsletters are based on a voluntary subscription service that anyone can join.

The main newsletter, titled "MontyMail," will contain information on game updates and new releases as well as a plethora of the usual Freeverse humor, including jokes, game hints, and recipes. For those who simply want the facts, a second, bare-bones announcement list is also available for subscription.

Freeverse also promises not to spread around subscribers' personal information:

As has always been our policy, we will NEVER sell your email address to anyone. We don't like it when its done to us, and we wouldn't do it to you.

Custer Goes to the Races

Brad Custer, IMG's hard-working desktop artist, is back from last week's well-deserved Thanksgiving vacation with a new pic today. This week's desktop should be appreciated by fans of F1 Championship, as it depicts this officially licensed F1 title now shipping from Feral and MacPlay. Here's a clip from his update:

With the recent news from Feral Interactive that F1 Championship 2000 was shipping the requests for a desktop have been pouring in. I am not one to let down the viewers of my section so I started to work on one immediately. I tried to capture the feel of the package design created by Electronic Arts. I simply entitled it "Speed Racer" and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it. :)
