Fantasoft Releases Realmz 8.0.7 9:37 AM | Mike Apps | Comment on this story
Fantasoft has released the latest version of their shareware RPG Realmz. Realmz is a 2D RPG that features turn-based combat and open-ended gameplay. The whole look of the game harkens back to games such as Ultima and Wizardry. Included with Realmz are a character editor and a scenario editor. Here's a description of Realmz from MacGameFiles: Realmz is a fantasy role-playing game with an extensive world to explore. Play several characters as they travel about the realm, looking for adventure in whatever awaits them. Some of the scenarios for Realmz have clear objectives, but in the introductory "The City of Bywater" there is no underlying goal for its completion. You are a group of adventurers who have arrived in the city of Bywater with a small amount of money and a great desire for adventure. The story line is fairly loose, so you can pretty much go wherever you like, whenever you like. Some people will like this better than strictly linear games that guide you along a path. Finish X, so you can try Y, to get to Z. What happens if X is boring, or you can't figure it out? You would be stuck in that case. Never fear! Now you will be able to do what YOU want to do, not what the game designers want you to do. Pretty slick! The system requirements for the game are light:A Mac Capable of 256 colors 640 x 480 resolution or better 8 MB of ramThe update or the full version can be downloading using the links below. Also, for information on Realmz and other Fantasoft games, follow the link to their website.

NWN 'Witchwork' Add-on Interview 9:36 AM | Mike Apps | Comment on this story
HomeLan recently had an interview with Derek French and Rob Bartel of BioWare about their upcoming add-on to Neverwinter Nights. Entitled Witchwork, the add-on will be the first in a series of freely downloadable adventures created by the BioWare team. The Interview covers many different aspects of this add-on from how BioWare made plans to release a series of add-ons to the background story of Witchwork. Here's a snippet: HomeLAN - How did the idea for the Witchwork modules come about?
Rob Bartel - First off, embarking on a module series like this just seemed like an extremely fun thing to do. There seemed to be a lot of interest from the community in a professionally-designed roleplaying experience like this, expressed both by regular board posters and respondents to some of our post-release surveys. Before I pitched the concept to the rest of the Live Team, however, I sat down and came up with a list of concrete ways in which such a series could benefit both BioWare and the community. It seemed like an ideal chance to showcase some of the top-notch fan-created content, for instance, and introduce the community to some of our more advanced website features like the new Guilds & Player Registry. It also keeps people interested and involved in what the game has to offer. If people are having a blast with Witchwork, for instance, they'll be much more interested in picking up future Neverwinter products.
As for the actual story ideas behind the series, they're coming from various sources. Some are ideas I originally had for the Official Campaign or other projects we have underway here at BioWare. Others I'm definitely making up as I go along. I seem to come up with the bulk of them whenever I make the long drive back to Saskatchewan for friends' weddings, family holidays, and the like. The neat thing about Witchwork, though, is that it's an evolutionary process. I have some basic ideas sketched out for future modules but fan feedback is going to play a large part in how the series develops. BioWare is currently working on the Mac port of Neverwinter Nights in-house. All Neverwinter Nights modules, including the ones BioWare makes will be fully compatible with the Mac version. The full interview, and info on the Mac port can be reached using the links provided.

Backyard Hockey Mac-bound 9:36 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story
Parents may be familiar with the Backyard line of children's sports games. Developed by Infogrames subsidiary Humongous Entertainment, the Backyard titles feature various sports played by mini-versions of real-life players as well as imaginary ones. An IMG reader recently forwarded us an e-mail he received from Infogrames after inquiring about an ad from CompUSA listing Backyard Hockey as a hybrid Mac/PC after finding only the PC title on store shelves. The response is quite encouraging: You will be able to purchase the Mac version of this title in December 2002. If you've already purchased the CD, please send your full mailing address as we will exchange your version with the PC/MAC hybrid version as soon as it's available. Though Infogrames' site fails to mention the Mac version, it's great to get confirmation to the contrary from Infogrames, and the offer to exchange the PC-only version for a hybrid disc is even nicer. For those unfamiliar with Backyard Hockey, this title continues the Backyard trend, featuring customizable uniforms, all 30 NHL teams, and real-life players such as Mike Modano. More information can be found at Infogrames' official site.

New Urban Terror Beta Release Tomorrow 9:36 AM | Jean-Luc Dinsdale | Comment on this story
Quake III mod developers Silicone Ice Development are readying the new version of their Quake III total conversion mod Urban Terror for its release this Saturday. The new version Beta 2.6 is being released with much fanfare: To kick off the release party, Urban Radio will be taking to the Internet airwaves beginning at 1:00pm EST/10:00am PST with Oswald and Dragonne. We will be talking Beta 2.6, along with running a contest with a video card as the top prize, along with other swag we will be giving away, including cases of Bawls, T-shirts courtesy of GeekWearZ and gaming headsets. Join us for all the action in #urbanterror on irc.enterthegame.com. Urban Terror is a popular total conversion mod for Quake III Arena. Similar to Half-Life's Counter-Strike and Unreal Tournament's Tactical Operations, Urban Terror is a "realism" based modification that replaces Quake 3's whimsical other-wordly scenarios with realistic weapons, armor, locales, physics, damage system, player models, and more. Contrary to the typical Quake style of play, Urban Terror emphasises co-operative teamplay, stealth techniques, and strong communication skills amongst players. The new version, weighing in at 60 megs for the update and a hefty 225 megs for the full download, will be available from the Silicone Ice website starting from 3:00 pm Eastern on Saturday. Stay tuned to IMG for more news on this popular mod as it develops.

Dubbed the "Search For The Hidden iPod Contest", the contest will reward players who can find an iPod hidden somewhere in the game: The contest challenges Mac gamers to explore the dungeon and locate the hidden personal Apple iPod of Freeverse President Ian Lynch Smith. The hidden music player contains the entire album of Jared, the Butcher of Song. Custer Lives Forever 9:36 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story
As reported earlier by IMG, MacPlay's long-awaited title No One Lives Forever: Game of the Year Edition went gold last week. To celebrate its imminent arrival, Custer has updated his desktop corner with a tribute to Cate Archer, the lead protagonist of this 60s-themed FPS: This past Wednesday it was announced by MacPlay that No One Lives Forever: Game of the Year Edition went gold. Inspired by my anticipation for this game I decided to head back to the outrageous realm of NOLF. With the help of the media kit from MacPlay and a little inspiration from watching Austin Powers I was able to create another desktop to honor this announcement. In this week's offering I tried to capture the retro feel established by the design of the game box. I simply entitled it "Unity" and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it. :) Those who wish to download this week's desktop can find it in the usual place. Don't forget to check out our preview as well for more information on this title.
