Westlake: EQ Nears Alpha, More...
6:00 AM | Andy Largent | Comment on this story

Macintosh game porting house Westlake Interactive has updated their game status page with news on the many projects in development. As noted in IMG's One on One with Westlake president Glenda Adams Friday, massively multiplayer online RPG EverQuest is very close to being deemed alpha. Reaching this state means the game is playable and most of the major features are implemented. EverQuest is currently set for a Mac OS X release sometime next year, though a public beta may be made available earlier than that.

In other Westlake news, two other projects which have yet to be announced have also made progress recently. "The Chosen One" has been declared First Playable, while "Finest Hour" is now in Alpha. Both games are set to support OS 9 as well as OS X.

IMG Previews Bugdom 2
11:34 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

Inside Mac Games has posted a preview of Pangea Software's upcoming action-adventure game, Bugdom 2. According to Pangea's Brian Greenstone, Bugdom 2 went GM last night and should be released shortly.

Here's a snippet from the Bugdom 2 preview:

Bugdom 2 is a title of the action/arcade persuasion, and like all good examples of the genre, itís incredibly easy to jump into. Thanks to the fact that heís a grasshopper, Skipís powerful legs allow him to run in any direction and jump fairly high. In addition, he can also fly by double-tapping the jump button, a feature that players will have to master in order to get past certain areas. Skip canít fly forever, however, and must replenish his flight meter periodically by finding purple berries.

Skip can also pick up and carry objects around when necessary, an element that becomes integral to puzzle solving. Early in the game, Skip will encounter various friends, including Sam the Snail and Sally the Chipmunk, both of which will pose tasks to Skip. While Sally is normally content with acorns, Sam will often request various items and tasks from Skip, including finding and placing the head of a scarecrow back on its body or finding a lost shell.

Pricing for the online downloadable version of Bugdom 2 has been set at $30, while the boxed CD version will be at $34.95. The online version should be released within the next few days. In the meantime, be sure to check out our preview.

Bioware Posts Neverwinter Nights Mac Page, Screenshots
11:01 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

Bioware, the company behind the popular RPG, Neverwinter Nights, has created a page on its web site dedicated to the Mac version. Along with three screenshots from the Mac version of NWN, Bioware has posted an update on the game:

[Oct 11 2002] Mac development is progressing, and the posted screenshots show the main menu and character selection screens. The Mac server screenshot is from a previous site update, earlier this month. This week several GUI display and mouse input issues were resolved. We are continuing to move forward integrating more recent changes to the game and bringing our Mac code up to Mac OS X standards.
Although the web site doesn't mention any release dates, the site does mention that a press release from MacSoft, the publisher of the Mac version, regarding release dates and system requirements should be coming soon.

A recent post to the IMG forums confirms the helicopter flight simulator Enemy Engaged: Comanche vs. Hokum is still underway for the Mac and, in fact, in beta testing now. Nicholas Shanks, programmer for Feral Interactive, notes that despite the long development cycle, they are making progress. There is still no definite release date, though:

It's currently in beta, though there's no ETA on a release date at the moment. The game has not been canned.

id Software programmer/designer Grame Devine has released the newest point release of Quake 3: Arena for Mac. He notes that that the update is for testing purposes only, and only updates the input timing for slower computers:

I've put another update executable (the .sit file) up there for testing (update 4).

+ The only change here is an update to the input timing system for slower CPUs. DOOM3 stuff today however rocked.

Graeme.
