Oni Issues Under Mac OS X 10.2
9:24 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story

If you've played Oni under Mac OS X 10.2, then you've probably noticed sound cutting in and out and making strange noises from Bungie's Oni. MacFixIt recently got in touch with Omni Group, who ported Oni to OS X, regarding the sound issue. According to Omni's Wil Shipley, a patch will be released as soon as possible.

We're aware of it. It really stinks. Our three game porters are all really busy these days bringing new games to the Mac -- we have two unannounced and one announced title that they're working on.

We're going to try to get a release done when we get a chance, since I love Oni so much, but it's hard when we've got a huge stack of new games to get through.

This is good news for gamers who still love and play Oni. We'll be sure to keep you posted on any future developments.

IMG Reviews The Sims: Vacation
1:05 PM | IMG News | Comment on this story

Today, IMG has posted to a review of Aspyr Media's latest Sims title, The Sims: Vacation. Written by Michael Phillips, the review covers Vacation's various Sims enhancements.

Here's a clip:

Unlike previous Sims expansion packs, with the exception of Hot Date, aside from adding new items to amuse bored Sims, Vacation adds entirely new locations for Sims to explore and enjoy. Thanks to the grand opening of a new Resort Island, Sims are able to leave home and enjoy activities from camping to snowboarding. Unlike actual vacationing, planning a Sim vacation is quick and painless. Sims simply need to pick up the telephone, call for the resort shuttle and they’re on their way to various forms of paradise. When the shuttle arrives, all Sims occupying the household must tag along on the vacation. No one gets to stay home and sit out the vacation fun.

Shadowbane Interviews, Video
11:45 AM | Andy Largent | Comment on this story

The Shadowbane site has news of a few different interviews posted recently about this massively multiplayer online role-playing game. The first is a chat with Jason "Tangent" Durall, lead world builder for Shadowbane. A huge 3D landscape for a game like Shadowbane obviously needs a lot of work, and Durall talks about the difficulties getting the lands of Shadowbane created, different toolsets being used, and the concepts of 'zoning' which many other MMORPGs have:

Some time ago it was said that there won't be typical zoning a la EQ. How will the zoning work instead, and are there any areas that will require a load time zone?

Tangent: Shadowbane features a persistent world, with every area "existing" all the time, with your client loading only the areas near you in a particular radius. In the beta currently, there is a bit of lag when you enter some of the larger, more complex areas (or teleport into an area), but that will be lessening significantly or disappearing entirely as the graphics get optimized. You don't ever see a "loading" screen, or anything like that - your character and the world surrounding them are always on screen, and you should be able to move and interact with the environment at all times.

The rest of the interview gives an interesting look at the inner-workings of the game, so be sure to give it a read.

Shadowbane's Chris "Vosx" Mancil has also taken some time to interview another employee, Sam "Meridian" Johnson, a writer for the game. The interview has been captured on video and is going to become availble in five parts on the Shadwobane Vault site. If you're on a low-bandwidth connection, you can also read transciptions of the first two movies available now. Look for the last three to be posted soon.

Shadowbane is being developed simultaneously for Mac OS X and Windows and the game's release was recently pushed back into early next year. Stay tuned to IMG for any new information on the status of Shadowbane in the coming months.

Lineage II Interview
9:24 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story

GameSpy has posted the results of a recent interview with the Korean branch of NCsoft, makers of the online MMORPG Lineage: The Blood Pledge. The focus of the interview is on their next project, Lineage II: The Chaotic Chronicle, an MMORPG NCsoft is hoping will be even more popular than their first runaway success.

Though the races have yet to be finalized, NCsoft notes that they currently have humans, elves, and dark elves up and running, with orcs and dwarves to follow. Players will also be able to customize their characters cosmetically and develop them via a skill system that utilizes skill points earned through completing quests.

Perhaps taking a page from the folks at Shadowbane Lineage II will also feature siege warfare. NCsoft stresses that 3D structuring will play a great role during siege combat, with players having to take into consideration height differences and building structures. They also note some interesting tactics that may be used:

That said, however, I can tell you that a wide array of systems are being prepared, such as aerial battles astride wyvern, dwarves summoning siege weapons, breaking down ramparts, scouting and sniping atop high watchtowers, etc.
Though plans for a Mac version have yet to be announced, it should be noted that Lineage II will be running off of the Unreal engine - the same one powering Unreal Tournament 2003. In the meantime, more information and screenshots can be found at the GameSpy preview.
