Cro-Mag Rally Shareware Released

A year and a half since its initial release, Pangea Software has decided to re-release its Cro-Mag Rally video game as shareware. Available for download at, the shareware version weighs in at 130 MB, and the shareware registration is priced at $20.

Brian Greenstone, President and CEO of Pangea Software, said:

We're down to our last 65 boxed copies, which will be sold out in no time, and rather than build more units we decided to convert the game to shareware so that people can download and pay for it online. This should be especially helpful for international customers who currently pay very high shipping costs and import taxes.
Last month Pangea re-released Bugdom as shareware and decided to give 50% of the profits during March to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The final numbers are not in yet, but Pangea thinks that it has raised about $1000 for the charity.

IMG has posted a review by hardware editor Lucian Fong of the T3Hub, a miniature USB hub from Dr. Bott LLC:

These days, everyone and their mother are making USB products and itís hard to tell which ones are high quality. Sure, itís likely that any hub you choose will work fine, but as Mac users, itís our duty to demand more than basic functionality out of a product. We want something that is functional, easy to use, and warrants a double take from our geek peers.

Screenshots at Official Elite Force II Page

Paramount Pictures has launched the official web page at for the upcoming Star Trek Elite Force II, to be published for the PC by Activision.

Currently, the only content at the Elite Force II web page is the Activision press release announcing the game (covered by IMG on April 4) and four impressive, full-sized screenshots from this new first person shooter based on the Quake III: Team Arena engine.

While Elite Force II has not been announced for the Mac (it was only just announced for the PC), the chances seem good: both the original Elite Force and its Expansion Pack, developed by Raven Software, were published for the Mac by Aspyr, and two previous Quake-engine games from Ritual Entertainment (Elite Force II's developer), Sin and Heavy Metal F.A.K.K. II, were also published for the Mac.

Civilization III Editor Progress Update

From time to time we've posted updates on the Civilization III editor that is being ported to the Mac by the person who ported the game, Brad Oliver. In a recent post to the IMG Forums, Oliver says the editor is coming along and should be beta by the end of the week:

It's coming. I'm hoping to have it to beta by the end of the week. I have to split my time between it and finishing up Battlegrounds. We also had an Apple engineer in town recently showing us the ways of HID Manager, so I spend a day or two last week screwing around with that. It's all part of life's rich tapestry.
We'll keep you posted on any future developments.

Lineage Mac Resources

Thanks to Glenn Mandel, PR representative for NCsoft, for letting us know of a new Mac section on the Lineage web site. Now that the game is officially out of the beta, this new section will help those wanting to try Lineage to get started quickly with the game. It includes a brief overview of the title, a FAQ list with answers on how NCsoft's payment system works, and a link to download the game now.

Also of great benefit to Mac users is the official Mac message board on the Lineage site. There are many fellow Mac gamers available on the forum to answer any questions you may have about the game. Check out the Lineage Mac section now if you haven't already tried out this massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

Black & White MP Patch Status

New information on the upcoming multiplayer patch for Black & White has been posted recently to the IMG Forums courtesy of Zonic's Dair Grant. This update will enable multiplayer play on the popular 3D "god-game" and is in testing now with a release expected "fairly soon." Unfortunately, the patch won't be cross-platform, and in a second post, Grant explains in detail why it is currently impossible to allow for Mac-PC play:

We spent a lot of time looking at this, and had several conversations with Lionhead about changes they could make to the PC version to improve the portability. However even with those changes, we ran into a couple of issues which simply prohibit it.

The problem is that the network model assumes that exactly the same code is being executed on each client, and due to a couple of differences between Visual C++ (the Windows compiler) and CodeWarrior (the Mac compiler) we can never get them to match.

The same restrictions apply to the Windows version as well - by design, every new PC release breaks compatibility with previous versions just in case Visual C++ has generated different code.

This is a very fragile system, but given it's the way the code works on Windows there's unfortunately not much we can do about it.

While this is a common problem among titles ported for the PC, it's good to see a full explanation of the exact reasons why it can't happen at this time. Stay tuned to IMG for more information on the patch in the near future.

Lineage for Mac Goes Live

In a press release issued today, NCsoft announced that Lineage for the Mac has launched following a successful beta testing period. Lineage comes with a 30-day free trial. After the trial period, players are charged US$15 per month. Players can save money by purchasing four months at a rate of US$11.25 per month.

Gamers wishing to play can download the full version of the game at For those who do not prefer to download the game, a free game CD may be requested from the Web site and NCsoft will ship the disc via U.S. mail.

Mac users and PC users are able to play alongside each other in the Lineage. The game raises the concepts of community, social interaction, and combat to new levels with the introduction of Blood Pledges—strong alliances with friends and allies in the game world. Once a Pledge is formed, the players can develop a strategy for overtaking a castle. But winning the battle only means the game of politics and negotiation is just beginning. Keeping your castle is sometimes harder than capturing it.

The game currently boasts more than four-million active subscriptions and 330,000 concurrent users worldwide.

Icewind Dale II Interview

Fantasy game fan site Sorcerer's Palace recently sat down with Doug Avery, Associate Producer for the upcoming role-playing game Icewind Dale II, and have posted the results of their interview online. For those unfamiliar with the Icewind Dale series, the games were spun off from the incredibly popular D&D-based Baldur's Gate RPGs.

The interview covers quite a bit of information, from tie-ins regarding the first game to all the new features and rules being implemented in the upcoming sequel. In regards to the relationship between ID and ID2, the story of ID2 will take place a generation after the original. As the story progresses, ties between the story's antagonists and characters from the original will become apparent to those who have played the first one.

Avery notes that ID2 will also be incorporating the 3rd Edition D&D rule set. This includes skills, feats, and 3rd Edition multi-classing and armor class rules. Avery, when questioned about the poorness of the Druid class in the original ID, adds that Druids will be upgraded to match those from the 3rd Edition as well, making them a more powerful class and a more viable choice for those who wish to play them.

Along with the new rule set, several new races are also being implemented, including the ever-popular Drow:

I am actually playing a Drow too. They're pretty fun, but that day blindness penalty is a real kicker. Their innate abilities make up for it though. The other sub-races that I've had a really great time experimenting with are the Gold Dwarves, Wood Elves and Aasimar. They all have their pluses and minuses and figuring out various combinations for success is a lot of fun.
Those who prefer casting spells to swinging swords should be happy to hear that all major spellcasting classes will have access to spells of up to level nine. Avery, when questioned about the huge number of offensive area effect spells from the original ID, replies that there will be new defensive spells to bolster parties, and gives the stats for Executioner's Eyes as an example:
Level: 9
Range: Caster
Duration: 1 turn
Casting Time: 1
Area of Effect: 15-foot radius
Saving Throw: None

This spell enhances the vision of allies, allowing them to see the hidden weaknesses of all creatures. The divination grants a +4 attack bonus and a +4 bonus to critical hits (if you critical hit on a natural roll of 20, you now critically hit on any roll from 15-20) to all allies within the area of effect for the duration of the spell.

Aliens vs. Predator 2 Expansion Announced

Aliens vs Predator fan site recently posted an official press release heralding the impending release of an expansion to the popular first-person shooter Aliens vs Predator 2. Titled Primal Hunt, this expansion introduces new maps, weapons, and characters into the popular AvP universe.

The backstory to Primal Hunt starts some 500 years prior to AvP2. A Predator has discovered an artifact, apparently engineered by the ancient Pilot race, that allows the user to control Aliens. Unfortunately, that Predator stumbles into a stasis field and stays there until discovered and accidentally revived by a human 500 years later. While the humans and Predators vie for ownership of the artifact, a lone Alien also seeks the artifact with a different objective: to destroy it.

Here's a rundown of some of the new features Primal Hunt introduces:

  • Nine new single player levels (three per species)
  • Intense multi-player combat — includes four new levels
  • Includes all patches/updates and additional maps issued by Monolith since the release of AvP2
  • New species-specific weapons and combat styles
    - Human - Dual Pistols, Turret Gun, Deployable Sentry Gun
    - Predator - Energy Flechette, Self-Destruct (only in multiplayer)
  • Two new creatures indigenous to the planet
  • New environment — never-before-seen Predator ruins
  • Ties in with original story of Aliens versus Predator 2 and provides closure to some open-ended questions

Also posted at AvPNews are eight screenshots of Primal Hunt. Shown off in the new photos are the new Dual Pistols, the Energy Flechette, and random scenes of these weapons causing havoc.

Though the Mac version of AvP2 has yet to be released, we're hoping that this upcoming expansion set will also have a future on the Mac platform. IMG will be sure to keep readers informed as we gather more details on the topic.

Harpoon 3.4.8 Update Released

Jesse Spears of Spearsoft has released another update to quell some issues with gameplay in Harpoon3:

Version 3.4.8 of Harpoon3 is now available for download. The major changes for the Mac versions were many improvements to the Nuclear Weapon code, and 2 major bug fixes for the OS X version (one a crash bug, the other a potentially serious Update bug).
