Master of Orion 3 Delays Explained

Recently the Master of Orion III web site was updated with word from developer Quicksilver that the game would be delayed slightly beyond its initial Q1 release. While strategy fans of the series might be slightly disappointed at the news, it seems they are striving to make sure the game is fully balanced. Here's the full explanation:

During a regular examination of the state of the Master of Orion III project, both Infogrames and Quicksilver agreed that the game would benefit from extending its release date to the third quarter of 2002.

Work continues on the game unabated to the sounds of tapping keyboards and clicking mice. The web site and discussion boards remain open and all the latest news will be posted in these locations when it becomes available.

We understand that this decision might cause some consternation or concern. Don’t let it. MOO3 is a huge game that will receive a significant play balancing cycle. Bottom line: we will deliver an unparalleled gaming experience that is worthy of the Master of Orion franchise.

Quicksilver is making the Mac and PC versions of MOO3 simultaneously. MacSoft will publish the game for the Mac once its ready for release later in the year.

Gamesome Mac Returns Next Week [Updated]

Due to some technical difficulties, the Mac gaming radio show The Gamesome Mac will not be heard tonight as scheduled. The show will be back next Monday night, April 15, on the MacTV Network at its usual time of 8-10 pm Central Time.

Tune in next week to chat with Brian Greenstone of Pangea Software, have your burning Mac gaming questions answered, and get a chance at some game giveaways. If you missed The Gamesome Mac's debut and interview with Westlake Interactive's Glenda Adams, the archive is now available on the MacTV Network web site. Who says there aren't enough RPG's on the Mac? Thanks to MacPlay, another RPG in the form of Icewind Dale has made it to the Mac. Today Michael Phillips reviews this splendid game.

Here's a snippet from the review:

Icewind Dale takes place in the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons world known as the Forgotten Realms. Icewind Dale itself is a territory located in the northernmost part of the Forgotten Realms, near the ever-treacherous Spine of the World Mountains. The adventure begins in the small fishing village of Easthaven. Winter has been unusually cruel this year, supply caravans are scarce and matters only look to get worse. Furthermore, the neighboring town of Kuldahar has been undergoing strange attacks, residents disappearing in the dead of night, leaving only the darkness behind to bear silent witness to their grim fate. Evil is certainly afoot, something must be done. Enter Hrothgar, self-appointed protector of Easthaven and retired adventurer. While having a mug of ale in the local tavern, Hrothgar notices a band of weather worn travelers warming by a roaring fire, by the look of their gear, he can tell they’ve seen their fair share of dastardly foes. Hrothgar has been called by the Archdruid Arundal to assist in protecting his embattled home. Thus, Hrothgar decides to enlist the aid of these adventurers for the investigation of the tumult at Kuldahar. Now, the stage is set for the player to begin their journey.

MacGamer Interviews Peter Tamte

MacGamer's Corey "Keep up the good work all of you" Tamas has interviewed Peter Tamte of Destineer Studios. Among other interesting items having to do with Mac gaming, this specific statement came out about Halo for Macintosh:

One thing which Mac Halo naysayers tend to focus on is, even though Bungie has stated repeatedly that Halo will come to Mac, Microsoft pulls the financial strings (suggesting that it's not for Bungie to say one way or another if a Mac version can or will get made). When you say that you "know this to be true" about Halo for Mac, is this because of Bungie's assertion of it or because Microsoft has been clear with you about it? Or something else?

Anybody who has asserted that Microsoft will prevent Halo from shipping on the Macintosh is not well informed. Making Halo available for Macintosh is a promise that was made by Ed Fries, the VP who manages all of Microsoft's games software, on stage with Steve Jobs at Macworld Expo.

Quake 3 Fortress 2.0 Released, Mac Problems

The long-awaited Quake 3 Fortress 2.0 mod has finally been released, but not without some issues for Mac users. After a year in development (and two years since the original release), the hot new mod has been released by the QF3 developement team.

Quake 3 Fortress is based on the classic and all-time popular Classic Quake class-based mod, Team Fortress. The mod offers primarily team based capture the flag type gameplay, but this new version also gives you some slight twists such as “capture and hold” games – where you try to hold on to the “flag” (it’s actually a duck) for as long as possible without getting killed. The longer you hold on to the flag, the more team points you get.

After the release over the weekend, however, Mac users began to encounter problems with the mod. A short Mac FAQ created by "Firestarta" explains the problems:

Q. What exactly is the problem with Macs and Q3f 2?

A. Recently due to some VM code changes We have encountered some engine bugs that only affect Mac users. These bugs are caused by the VM interpreter.

Q. What does that mean for Mac users?

A. Mac users won't be able to join Pure Servers. This is obviously a problem because most public servers are sv_pure 1. However, many servers will be running unpure until a fix is released. (Q3f 2's Cheat-Protection abilities allow this). We are working to get a fix out ASAP.

There are a few minor issues such as menu stutters, but these should not affect gameplay. You might find that your FPS is a little lower than usual. The HUD also appears to be taking up more FPS than it should.

A fixed version should be out soon. We'll keep you posted when it does.

Reckless Drivin' 1.4 Released

Reckless Drivin' author Jonas Echterhoff wrote in to IMG to let us know that he has released a new version of the popular action game, bring it to version 1.4. The new version includes gamepad support under OS X and also adds force feedback support using the MacAlly iShock II.

Echterhoff offered up a description of the game:

Reckless Drivin' is a new action game for the Mac. It's gameplay is similar to it's predecessor, Burning Rubber, a Mac shareware game I released in 1996. In Burning Rubber one had to drive a car through 2-dimensional levels as fast as possible, leaving as much destruction as possible on the way. Reckless Drivin' follows the same basic principle, however, it has been completely rewritten from scratch, and it employs a new graphics engine featuring smooth, dynamically zoomed, scrolling 16-bit graphics. The physics simulation has been redesigned to realistically resemble skidding and tire tracks on different road surfaces.
Here's a list of fixes in 1.4
  • Added some support for gamepads under MacOS X using the HID Manager. See the Mac OS X section of the Readme for more info.
  • Added Force-Feedback Support. You can now play Reckless Drivin' using the MacAlly iShock II, which lets you actually *feel* the car skidding and crashing into other cars.
  • Fixed a bug which could cause the game not to remember your track record times.

    Hot New SimCity 4 Screenshots

    Apart from the preview in the May issue of Computer Gaming World revealing SimCity 4, not much is known about this game. It has yet to be officially announced by Maxis or its parent company, Electronic Arts.

    But that's not stopping web sites from posting screenshots of the game. A site called Gameport has posted over a dozen hi-res screenshots and they simply look gorgeous. Be sure to pop by and have a look.

    An announcement may be forth-coming at the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo next month. We'll keep you posted on any future developments.

    Game Doctor 1.3.4 Released

    Today, Inside Mac Games released Game Doctor 1.3.3, the largest collection of hints, cheats, walkthroughs, and other game enhancements (called "prescriptions") available for the Macintosh.

    Here are a few of the program's features:

    • Over 1000 prescriptions, with more to follow!
    • Over 100 game patches not available anywhere else.
    • More than ten prescription types, including:

      • Text prescriptions with embedded sounds, pictures, files, and Internet links.
      • Patch prescriptions that automatically locate and duplicate the target file.
      • Progressive Walkthrough prescriptions that use the Universal Hint System.
    • An open architecture that lets anyone create prescriptions using simple, intuitive editors.
    • Automatic compression for smaller prescription files.

    Abducted Site Update

    The Contraband news page was updated recently with a new update on their original Mac/PC thriller FPS Abducted. While still in early development, the team has "been making very steady progress on this game," according to Contraband. A new web site has been put in place for Abducted which includes a number of new screen shots of the game in action.

    The Abducted site also gives information on the game's backstory as well as the engine it's based upon. It seems that while the game will take advantage of many of today's modern 3D features, like other upcoming FPS titles such as DOOM 3, Abducted it will need some powerful hardware in order to play:

    Our engine is based on in-house, bleeding edge technology. One of the first engines to render everything in real-time without the use of traditional 3D engine "tricks", everything is real-time down to the shadows themselves.

    A fully dynamic world environment makes the visuals phenomenal. Every surface is rendered per-pixel with both diffuse and specular bump mapping, and tremendously impressive high polygon scenes throughout. Abducted will have the most impressive environments seen in a game to date.

    System requirements aren't finalized yet, but a fast hardware accelerator such as a Geforce3 will be mandatory. Hardware such as the Geforce3 or Radeon 8500 can push millions of polygons around with ease, and Abducted will be right there ready to take advantage of the special features these (and future) cards have to offer.

    Custer Survives

    Resident IMG artist Brad Custer has released another work this week based on Survivor, the popular TV-based game from MacSoft. It seems there have been a number of calls for the title, according to the update from Custer:

    Survivor has been out for awhile now. However, that hasn't stopped the weekly requests for a desktop of this game. I finally found the time to work it into the schedule. This week's selection was created from art supplied by MacSoft and is titled, "Immunity" for one of the key aspects of the game. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it. :)

    Apple Launches Games 'Buzz'

    In a move that can only underscore the world's greatest computer company's renewed committment to gaming, Apple Computer has started a feature on its 'Games' page called Buzz on the Web. This new section offers a regular roundup of the news and views offered across the pantheon of Mac-focused gaming news sites including MacCentral and Inside Mac Games. One-paragraph summaries are given for each 'Buzz' item, along with links to the full story, as well as downloadable demos and of course, OS X patches.

    The Sims Online Going Beta This Summer

    According to Gamespot the world's best-selling game of all time is making further progress towards its impending massively multiplayer version, The Sims Online. This next iteration of The Sims franchise is slated to be available for external beta-testing sometime in the Summer of 2002, with an anticipated release in the Fall of this year. Be sure to check out the full news item on Gamespot for eight new Sims Online screenshots. Still no word on the possibility of a Macintosh version, but Mac fans of the game remain hopeful, as always.
