UT 2003 Details, Mac Possibility 7:10 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story
XGR.com, otherwise known as Extreme Gaming Radio, recently hosted an IRC chat with several developers of the upcoming title Unreal Tournament 2003. Lasting for almost 4 hours, the chat covered a huge variety of questions from eager players waiting to get their hands on this game. Of course, the main thing on the minds of Mac gamers is whether or not they're going to be able to grace their own machines with this title. Interestingly enough, the subject of a Mac port came up when someone inquired about Open GL support: [North] will OpenGL be supported? [MarkRein[Epic]] OpenGL will be the API used on Mac and if there's a Linux client it will use OGL [MarkRein[Epic]] But there will be no OpenGL driver for Windows this time around - it's not necessary anymore. While far from concrete, this at least strongly hints that the idea of a Mac version is definitely being kicked around. The rest of the chat, which is quite lengthy, covers almost every topic that a gamer might think of, from cheat prevention to netcode/server settings to special moves. Unreal Cleaned is currently hosting a cleaned up version of the transcript that has been orgnanized into easy-to-reference sections. Those interested in further UT 2003 details should definitely give this one a look.

More UT 2003 and Unreal 2 Mac News 4:58 PM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story
An IMG reader, also known as Chainsaw in the IMG forums, recently emailed Epic's Mark Rein to get more details on the possibility of seeing a Mac version of Unreal Tournament 2003 and Unreal 2. Here's what Rein had to say: Chances are very high. Mac plans have not been finalized yet but we've always been supporters of the Mac and you can expect to see both of these games on Mac at some point. Both Unreal Tournament 2003 and Unreal 2 will be published by Infogrames, the parent company of MacSoft. Could MacSoft be publishing these highly anticipated titles? Will there be an announcement at E3 this May? Only time will tell.

Many Mac gamers who are in the market for a new G4 are wondering whether to choose the Radeon 7500 or GeForce4 MX. After all, they want to get the best performance for their money and it’s hard to tell who the clear winner is without knowing the technical details and/or sifting through Apple’s marketing. New Shadowbane Screenshots 9:12 AM | Richard Porcher | Comment on this story
Yesterday, Wolfpack Studios, developers of the upcoming MMORPG Shadowbane, added a few new screenshots to the Official Shadowbane website. The screenshots show off, in glorious detail, the game's more unique armor sets, such as Wyrmscale armor, and Elven Platemail. Be sure to note the extraordinary level of detail that has been put into each set, right down to the texturing of the material. Shadowbane is one of the most eagerly anticipated of the upcoming MMORPGs scheduled to be released on the Mac. Currently, Shadowbane is in beta testing at Wolfpack, with an expected release date of "when it is ready." Originally planned for a launch during the first half of 2002, recent developments during the beta testing process prompted the change, which the developers felt was in the best interest of the game and its potential players. When it is released, Shadowbane will be published by UbiSoft. In addition to these screens, there is an assortment of older pics archived there. Head on over and browse through them by clicking the link below.

Bill Roper Interview 8:34 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story
Our good friend Corey "You're all doing a great job and I read your sites daily. Keep up the good work." Tamas from MacGamer has posted an interview with Blizzard producer Bill Roper. The interview covers various topics include Warcraft III, the races, the Mac version, and more. Here's a clip from the interview: We started with the idea of six races and we thought "Six? That sounds great! Twice as many as Starcraft! Twice is good!". One of the races we considered never got announced. We started with that race and thought "Yep, that's interesting, but what do we do with them?" So they never made the cut. We were then down to five including the four you know from the beta: the Humans, Orcs, Night Elves and Undead. Demons were going to be our other race, but as we started to think about the overall story and how people go through the single player game we realized that trying to create a player-controlled Demon race would undercut the nature of their power and scope. We'd sit and talk about how they'd interact in the storyline and what they meant to the world the player was in and we had to figure out what their harvesting units would be... and that just seemed to make them less awe-inspiring and mysterious. We looked at that and the fact that a lot of unit types you have to design for balance, for example the peon or peasant, and we couldn't think of a way to do that and keep the Demons as incredibly powerful as we wanted them to seem. For more be sure to head over to MacGamer for the rest of this very interesting interview.Warcraft III is sheduled to be released in June, 2002. Pre-orders are available through the IMG web store.

New Mac Games SIG Opened 7:10 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story
The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) has recently opened a SIG devoted to Mac games. The SIG (short for Special Interest Groups) has been opened to in order to strengthen the Mac gaming market through means such as proving the viability of the Mac platform as well as offering information to current and future developers of Mac titles. A forum has also been put up to encourage discussion among those interested in Mac gaming. Moderating the forum are Suellen Adams of Westlake Interactive and Michael Hughes of 13th Floor Gaming. Hughes has officially started off the forum with this posting: For many of us out there, it has become the norm to receive great games constantly. That is, if you are on the PC, XBOX, or other systems. For those of us on the Macintosh we are constantly forced to suffer the ports of games several months to years after the PC version's are outs. Sometimes with some great games [Half-Life] the project is cancelled before the game can even be finished. However, now we have a dinstinct opportunity. Macintosh has always been held in the face of obscurity. Here you will be able to voice your opinions and get the views on the Macintosh out there. We will probably still have the PC versus Mac debate but we would prefer that this area be used so that people can actually petition for games and show that the Macintosh is a viable platform. It is rapidly re-becoming a major player in the computer industry. For this reason, we must show our support and solidarity for the Macintosh. Future plans for the SIG include articles, news, features, developers, and interviews.Be sure to visit the site and help make the presence of the Mac market be known!

Westlake: Medal of Honor and Undying Reach Beta 7:10 AM | Andy Largent | Comment on this story
In what will be great news for FPS fans everywhere, Westlake Interactive has announced that both Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Undying have reached beta. With Medal of Honor just announced and Undying's many delays, these two titles qualify for both fastest and most lengthy ports respectively out of Westlake's entire current impressive lineup. The World War 2 shooter Medal of Honor is progressing very quickly under the work of Duane Johnson (who recently ported another Quake 3-based game, Return to Castle Wolfenstein). While the initial release date was late summer, it might slide in a little sooner: Medal of Honor: Allied Assault is Beta! Westlake has begun beta testing MOH:AA, and is looking forward to getting the software all polished up and ready to ship out to gamers. We're planning a very thorough testing period to squash all the bugs we can. The game is playing very well, and Mac gamers should be happy to know we're well ahead of our original schedule, so a ship date before the original August target looks very probable. No promises yet, of course, but stay tuned for more info on this highly acclaimed shooter.Undying is a thriller based upon the work of famed horror author Clive Barker which has received much praise on the PC side. This UT-based game ran into a few technical hurdles as well as a slight priority shift, but it seems well on the way towards completion now. None other than Westlake president Glenda Adams is on the job, and she expects it to be wrapped up in the next few weeks. Both games will be published by Aspyr Media. Kudos goes out to the entire Westlake team for all of their hard work.

Ambrosia Software fans currently enamoured with their recent smash-hit Escape Velocity: Nova might be looking for a gaming change of scene. Luckily it seems Bubble Trouble for OS X is still underway and making progress at the company. The fun underwater strategy game was set to hit private beta milestone 5 a while ago, but according to the title's progress logs, it was temporarily held up. Alex Metcalf notes some roudy fish were the problem, but it has been corrected for the time being. [Update] Another post early this morning gives more details on exactly what has been changed in beta 5: - Editor is a lot more stable and visually improved
- OS X performance improved
- animation smoothed (now using Carbon timers)
- a lot of visual changes to dialogs and so forth

- several b4 bugs squished
- Lots of other things I forgot to write down For more on Bubble Trouble, be sure to have a look at the Ambrosia site. Those not running in OS X might also check out the Classic demo.
