Payback Shipping Soon; Tzar Announced

German gaming site recently sent word of new developments with Virtual Programming's upcoming title Payback. According to their report, this criminal-driving game is in the final stages of testing and is expected out in January or February of next year. Payback is unashamedly inspired by titles like Grand Theft Auto, though it looks to stand out on its own merits as well.

In other news from the company, a new title, Tzar: Burden of the Crown, is now on its way to the Mac. Tzar is a real-time strategy game very much in the vein of Age of Empires II. Reviews seem mostly favorable for the title, which was released for the PC last year. Three separate races are included, each with its own tech tree and specialized campaigns.

There are three civilizations in Tzar - the European, the Asian and the Arabian. They have some features in common, while some are unique. All buildings and units bear the characteristics of their civilization. All civilizations are carefully balanced in order to take full advantage of their distinguishing features and levels of technological mastery.
Virtual Programming's third Mac title, WipeOut 2097, is in production and should be out early next month. Check out their web site for more information and stay tuned to IMG for the latest on all of these titles.

MacPlay: Project Deuce To Be Announced Soon

Following the announcement that Sacrifice has gone gold, MacPlay's Joshua Smith sent IMG a note this afternoon with word that a "major announcement" would be coming at Macworld Expo in San Francisco regarding a new game, currently code-named Project Deuce. Here's what Smith had to say about the game:

We have a new project under wraps for now - going by the project title Deuce. It is a major announcement for us. The actual game title will be revealed at MWSF.
Smith also went on to say, "I am more excited about this title than any other." Want to speculate on what Project Deuce could be? Be sure to stop by our forums and give us your best guess.

Sacrifice Goes Gold, Preview Posted

Missing their ship date by only one week, MacPlay announced today that Sacrifice, their 3D real-time strategy game for Mac OS 9 and X, has gone gold and is in production for a pre-holiday release.

Mark Cottam, president of MacPlay, stated:

We are pleased to meet our commitment to the Macintosh community by bringing Sacrifice to the market in time for the holidays. The game is an exciting and unique experience and we are positive that it will be a hit with action, RPG, and RTS fans alike.

Aspyr Projects Update

Aspyr Media just updated their list of upcoming titles with new information on three anticipated games. According to the company, Spider-Man is now at Final Candidate. This means it should be off to production very soon and swinging into stores before the end of the month. Kudos to Westlake Interactive programmer Mark Krenek for such a quick port.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is estimated for release by late December as well, although it's also described as still being in the Alpha stage of development; at least one of those claims is clearly an error. Westlake's own project status page lists the UT-based game at First Playable, so don't look for this title before January.

Aspyr's third announced title, Clive Barker's Undying, which also uses the Unreal Tournament engine, has unfortunately been pushed back again. The scary first-person shooter is now set for a February release.

Otto Matic, Cro-Mag Rally Updates Released

Pangea Software this morning released updates to Otto Matic (just published by Aspyr Media) and to their previous hit title, Cro-Mag Rally.

According to Pangea, Otto Matic 1.0.1 fixes a bug that would crash the metal game on the Farm level if you tried to supernova. The update also fixes other minor glitches. The Cro-Mag Rally 2.02 update corrects a few crashing bugs under Mac OS X.

Both updates, as well as new demos for both games, are available at our sister site, MacGameFiles.

GraphSim B&W Info, System Reqs

GraphSim Entertainment has added a new section of information to their site about Black & White, the upcoming god-game from the creative minds at Lionhead. As we've reported in the past, GraphSim will be distributing the game in North America, with Feral Interactive taking the other side of the Atlantic.

The GraphSim page gives lots of good information if you're wondering what Black & White is all about. Many screen shots are available, and for the first time they have released official system requirements for the title.

Here are both the required and recommended system specs:

Minimum - your Macintosh must have at least:
  • Mac OS 8.6
  • Macintosh with a 300 MHz or faster G3 or G4 processor
  • 128 MB of RAM
  • 500 MB of free hard disk space
  • 4X CD-ROM Drive or DVD drive
  • OpenGL-compatible 3D graphics card with at least 8 MB of VRAM
  • OpenGL 1.2.1 or later

Recommended - to get the best out of the game:

  • Mac OS 9.2 or Mac OS X
  • Macintosh with a 500 MHz or faster G3 or G4 processor
  • 256 MB of RAM
  • 16 MB of VRAM on your graphics card
  • 1 GB of free hard disk space
  • OpenGL-compatible 3D graphics card with at least 32 MB of VRAM

Classic Maps For Myth III

While Myth III: The Wolf Age for the Mac has been delayed until after Christmas, here is something that Myth fans can look forward to in addition to the new net and single player levels that MumboJumbo worked so hard on.

El Bastard of Vista sends word that they are working on a "Classic Map Pack" which aims to be released around the same time as Myth III. Maps we can expect to see in full Myth III glory include "If I Had a Trow...," "Mudpit Massacre," and "Gimble on the Wabe."

El Bastard posted a few screenshots of the work in progress over at, and it all looks good. Many of the maps contain new scenery that is unique to Myth III, and of course all the units are now in proper 3D, which should add some extra fun to the battles of old.

Blizzard Insider Reveals Warcraft III Details

Blizzard Entertainment, makers of the famed Warcraft and Starcraft series, recently released the December issue of their Blizzard Insider newsletter. Besides the usual contests and comments, this issue also reveals some details about two upcoming titles, Warcraft III and World of Warcraft.

Concerning Warcraft III, the Insider notes two new substantial changes. The first is that the inventory for Heroes has been increased from four slots to six, allowing Heroes to carry additional items to aid their side in battle.

The second, and perhaps more substantial, change is a feature dubbed Upkeep. Upkeep will directly affect the amount of gold that peons can mine based on the number of units a player has. The more units a player has, the slower the gold comes in. In contrast, players with less units will mine gold at a faster rate. Blizzard hopes this will help improve tactical management as well as make players more selective when building units.

The Insider also takes the time to answer several player-submitted questions concerning their upcoming massively-multiplayer online role-playing game, World of Warcraft. One fan asks if any of the new races found in WC3 will make it into WoW; the answer: "you will just have to wait and see." Another player asks about items:

Q: Will you be able to randomly find items, and if so, will these items be classified as in Diablo II (Rare, Unique, etc.)?

A: Monsters will have treasure that characters can loot, but these will be drawn randomly from a specific item class for that monster type. We do not expect to have the same vast amount of random items as in the Diablo series, but we will have items that are rare and even some that could be truly unique by limiting them to only one per server.

Also noted is the fact that Blizzard will not be allowing players to run their own servers for WoW.

Game Developer Honors GeForce3 and TiPB

MacCentral recently noted the honoring of the PowerBook G4 from Apple and the GeForce3 from Nvidia with Game Developer Magazine's Front Line awards:

The magazine annually singles out select hardware and software companies for providing a breakthrough product that streamlines the game development process and awards them the Front Line award. Front Line Award winners are determined by a panel of game developers specializing in the fields relevant to each category. Products are nominated in the various categories by Game Developer's editors, judges and readers, from which finalists are selected and evaluated based on criteria such as utility, value and innovation.
The choices, both in the Hardware of the Year category, should come as no surprise to Mac fans. Check out MacCentral's story for more information.
