Jeopardy 2, Wheel 2 Go Gold

Westlake Interactive has updated their news page with word on the 2nd editions of the popular game show titles Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune. Both have hit the Gold Master mark, meaning the final versions have gone through QA and are being sent off to production now. While MacSoft's site hasn't been updated with the news, the company will be publishing both and expects them to hit shelves in a few weeks.

For fans of either show, Westlake gives a quick rundown of what is new in these 2nd editions. Here's the scoop on Wheel of Fortune:

Wheel Of Fortune Second Edition, published by MacSoft, has been approved and declared Gold. The game is being sent to duplication and should be heading to stores over the next few weeks. This new edition includes new puzzles, back stage interviews, a sample contestant exam, and more.
Those looking for the Alex Trebek experience should look no further than Jeopardy! 2nd edition, with all-new content:
Jeopardy! Second Edition has also been approved for Gold Master, and is ready for duplication. Published by MacSoft, this new edition of the classic game show has thousands of new answers, an updated AI system, and back stage interviews.
Kudos go out to Westlake for helping gets these titles out just before the holiday rush. Both titles will likely retail around $30.

World War II: Panzer Claws for Mac?

The other day IMG received an email from Zuzzex, publishers of games such as Knights and Merchants and Earth 2150, both of which are being ported to the Mac by e.p.i.c., about their new RTS "World War II: Panzer Claws". The new title uses a brand new “Earth-III” engine and is set in the 1941 to 1944 time period. In the game, the player participates in battles beginning from the attack of Germany on the USSR, through the decisive battles in the East, operations in France and Italy, to the last German offensive in Ardennes Forest.

Curious, we emailed Zuzzex on the possibility of a Mac version coming to the Mac. Here's what they had to say:

It is possible that EPIC will do a port. They are currently working on porting Earth 2150 to the Mac. If they manage this, it will be easier to port the new engine.
e.p.i.c. Interactive entertainment has signed a contract with Zuxxez Entertainment to bring 3D RTS series Earth 2150 to the Macintosh. Earth 2150: Escape from Blue Planet will lead the way and should be available for Macgamers this winter. Sequels Earth 2150: The Moon Project and Earth 2150: Lost Souls will follow at a later date.

Tropico: Paradise Island Expansion Announced

Island dictators rejoice! PopTop Software, maker of the popular island management title Tropico, has recently announced an upcoming expansion set. Titled Paradise Island, this set adds tons of new features to the existing Tropico game, making it even more fun for leaders to turn their island nation into their "own personal paradise."

Included in the expansion set are 23 new senarios, 12 new buildings, 4 new tourists with matching boats, more Natural Disasters, new Dictator Attributes, and of course more will-enforcing Edicts. The game has also been enhanced with high score details, full views of buildings, and faster construction times.

Though the press release doesn't mention anything about platforms, we're hoping that this expansion set will be able to work for both Mac and PC platforms right out of the box. BreakAway Games is currently on board as the developer for this title, which is currently slated for a January 2002 release.

IMG: To X or Not To X

Like many Mac users, IMG's Editor in Chief, Tuncer Deniz, decided early on that OS X just wasn't for him. It was too slow, too foreign, and too cold. Having doubts that he would ever dump OS 9 for X, he recently did the unthinkable. He switched entirely to OS X...thanks to 10.1.

Here's a tidbit from the "To X or Not To X", an article written by Tuncer:

The first time I booted into OS X shortly after its release, chills ran up my spine. Like a chicken with its head cut off, I was lost. Everything about the new OS seemed foreign, cold, and, oh yeah, slow. My experiences were so negative, that booting into Mac OS 9 seemed like running into mama’s hands. Now this was home!

But like a good little Mac user, I followed each new release of OS X with bated breath. And while I dabbled in OS X each time an update was released, it wasn’t until 10.1 was released that I seriously began to think…hmm…is it time to switch?

New Unreal II Screenshots

Computer and Video has recently put up a plethora of new screenshots for Unreal II, the upcoming sci-fi FPS title from Infogrames and Legend Entertainment. The shots range from character models to wireframe checks to development sketches, and show off what is undoubtedly going to be an amazing-looking game.

Some of the more notable shots include one of 2 Skaarj warriors, complete with heavy body tattoos and signature wrist blades, a human in a heavy battle suit with rifle, and a gorgeous shot of what looks like a loader of some kind in a canyon, both in wireframe and fleshed out. For weapons fans, there's also a development sketch of a rocket launcher, which looks very large and quite powerful.

Fans of the Unreal series should definitely hike over and check out the new shots. We still have yet to hear any official word of a Mac port, though rest assured IMG is keeping all senses open for any news.

Myth II Meets Final Fantasy

Ever wonder what happens when popular computer and console RPGs collide? Obviously Brent McDonald did. Recently added to The Mill Archives was McDonald's latest creation: a Final Fantasy 6 (FF3 in the U.S.) conversion mod for the ever-popular Myth II: Soulblighter.

Fans of the FF series may remember that FF6 was a 16-bit game, complete with simple sprite-based graphics. This FF6 mod, being tongue-in-cheek, has recreated those same graphics through Myth II's various units, all of which should look instantly familiar to FF fans.

Here's a clip from the site description:

Hilarious action and solid gameplay were the prime goals of this project, and there is a map to match just about everyone's taste. Most all the maps are equal battles with the exception of the human stages where you have Good Guys vs. Bad Guys, in which case the good "super characters" are different from the bad ones.
Included with the mod are six multiplayer stages and one training map, which introduces players to the units' various abilities and available items. The mod is sized at 15.8 MB and is available for download at The Mill Archives. Any console RPG veterans itching for "the good old days" should definitely check this one out.

IMG Posts New Myth III Screenshots

The good folks at MacSoft this afternoon sent us a bundle of joy...a bunch of new Myth III: The Wolf Age screenshots from the Mac version. In addition to the new shots, they've offered some new information on Myth III, which is just weeks away from shipping on the Mac.

The game sets new standards for 3D real-time strategy games through the use of true 3D characters, procedural foliage, deformable terrain, innovative network games, a powerful roster of units and an engrossing story. Myth III has been heavily optimized for Altivec and Mac OS X, making Mac OS X the premiere platform for playing Myth III.

Mac CrystalSpace Update

iDevGames has scored a new update from Eric Sunshine, programmer for the open-source 3D engine CrystalSpace. This project has been ported to nearly every usable operating system, though it seems the Mac versions are lagging behind somewhat. One of the main issues is that, while the Cocoa (OS X) version is up-to-date, it's missing some key features like OpenGL and sound implementation. Because the author doesn't have any Apple hardware to work with, he's unable to finish these features. It is a testament to OS X's Unix underpinnings that someone without the OS can actually make a program that runs well on it. Hopefully either Sunshine will be able to obtain some Apple hardware or a OS X fanatic will be able to help him out.

For OS 9 users, the Carbon build is needing some help as well. The original maintainer is unable to continue keeping the port updated. Here's a clip:

It seems to be dead. Unfortunately, K. Robert Bate has not had time to maintain this port. Given the rate of development on the project, this port quickly became outdated. It has not been updated in many months and is surely quite broken.

We have not been able to find a new maintainer for this port, so it is likely that it will remain dead for the near future.

Galactic Core Final, Demo Released

Spiderweb Software has announced their new partnership with Chromite Software has already resulted in the release of Galactic Core for the Mac. This space strategy/war title sports six seperate campaigns, an editor to make more on your own, and very reasonable system requirements for those with less powerful hardware. Galactic Core needs only system 8.0, a 150MHz processor, and 24MB of RAM. A demo is now available for download, weighing in at a managable 6MB. Here's a clip with more on the title's gameplay:

You play one of six unique species locked in lethal warfare. Hop from planet to planet, colonizing the new worlds, creating new fleets, and attempting to overwhelm the enemy. Decide what to research, exploit the resources of your worlds, and decide what to build. Choose between huge warships and unusual strategic vessels, like planet killers and holographic vessels.
