Myth III Details Emerge

This title is still a year away, but many more gaming sites are making the rounds to dig up details on the newly-announced Myth III: The Wolf Age, the upcoming prequel to Bungie's Myth and Myth II. Daily Radar has posted a quick Q&A with Scott Campbell from Mumbo Jumbo, the company formed to develop the title. The interview covers topics such as Myth's dedicated fanbase, new features added in the prequel, and a new character called a Trow Iron Warrior. Here's a quick excerpt:

DR: What new feature has you most excited about Myth III?

SC: The incorporation of 3D unit models. This will completely change the look of the game. Having units that react with the landscape (like leaning forward as they walk up slopes), react to enemies (like turning to look at advancing foes), and having fluid animation from any angle and zoom level, will give the game a awe-inspiring appearance to match its already cutting-edge gameplay.

If you're looking for a more basic introduction to the title, GameSpot has written up a five-page preview of Myth III. It's also a semi-interview, with several quotes from the developers. This article discusses the history of the series , Mumbo Jumbo itself, and why Myth III will be so great. Here's another interesting clip about the famous Myth toolset:
Despite these changes, for the time being, the Myth III development team is using Bungie's venerable Fear and Loathing tools, though Scott Campbell said Mumbo Jumbo won't be sticking with these for long: "We are planning on doing a merger of the tools later on, something that will be used specifically for Myth III and something that is far more robust and actually cross-platform compatible. We're actually making tools right now that we will be using for Myth III that are not only cross-platform compatible, but will also allow you to do all the neat new things, use all the new scripting commands and the new models and 3D units and stuff that we're using in this game." Though it's unknown whether these tools will actually ship with the game, Campbell promises that if they're not in the box, they will be made available later on.
Though design/development only began in November, Myth III is on track for a release this Christmas, with Mac and PC versions being released simultaneously. Tony Hawk 2: First Playable, Details

IMG has just posted a new interview with Westlake Interactive and
Aspyr Media on the title they are porting and publishing (respectively),
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2. Both programmer Mark Krenek and Aspyr's president
Michael Rogers answer a variety of questions, including details on the game's current status,
their OS X plans, and the addition of multiplayer capabilities. It is revealed that the game has just
reached a 'first playable' state, and it will include play via the Internet
(which the PC version lacked). Here's a clip with more:

IMG: Will Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 have any multiplayer modes included other than play over Local Area Networks (which the PC version was restricted to)? Is it at all feasible to get the game running over the internet, perhaps via GameRanger?

Mark Krenek: Yes, multiplayer is supported. We will be using NetSprocket to implement AppleTalk and TCP/IP. GameRanger will also be supported as well!!!! So yes, internet games will be possible.

IMG: If multiplayer support is included, would it be playable with the PC port? Or is the PC version using Microsoft's DirectPlay to communicate, thus making it incompatible?

Mark Krenek: Unfortunately the PC version uses DirectPlay so we are not able to offer Mac to PC gameplay.

Neverwinter Nights Interview

Gaming Unlimited sat down with Neverwinter Nights' producer, Trent Oster for twenty questions. The interview goes over some of this Bioware title's many features, and reveals details on content of the game, as in how many items, monsters and spells players can expect to discover. This Advanced Dungeons & Dragons-based title features a custom build engine that is specifically targeted towards online gaming; in fact it is specifically designed to allow non-programmers to create and host their own detailed online dungeons, assembled from pre-made parts. Here's an example of how in-depth the solo game will be:

10.) Will there be hirelings or mercenaries to hire?

Yes, you will be able to hire henchmen in the official campaign – a number of taverns throughout Neverwinter have become the preferred watering holes of these varied adventurers-to-be. They will operate on their own AI for the most part, though you will be able to issue them a broad range of commands. Keep them well-fed and well-moneyed and they’ll see you to the end of your current mission. Should their morale slip too low, however, you may face a mutiny.

Eurogamer has posted an article on Synaptic Soups' upcoming cross-platform racer, entitled Crazy Car Championship. The article provides a detailed overview of what Synaptic Soup is aiming for with this visually interesting title. Specifically, they want to make sure the game is extremely customizable and fun. In this article they discuss their development process and the way they want to blend many different styles from previous games, such as Mario Cart and Wipeout. Here is an excerpt:

Customisation plays a major part in the game, replacing the usual tinkering with ride heights and suspension stiffness that you find in hardcore driving sims with a range of weird and wonderful optional extras and temporary power-ups to take advantage of. "The components all have a strong visual effect on the cars, as well as a gameplay effect. For example, you might replace a set of chunky piston driven wheels with a set of powerful space-age thrusters. These cause your car to hover just above the ground, but also effect the car's traction significantly."
We would like to remind you that CCC might possibly make it to the Mac OS, as the engine it is based on has already been ported; the decision remains up to the publisher. Synaptic Soup has currently not chosen a publisher, but they are in negotiations with several interested parties. We'll keep you updated

Apple Chases Down Driver

A new article posted in Apple's slowly-expanding game section features a look at Driver, the recent release from MacSoft. It's a quick preview, with quotes from both the creator of the game, Martin Edmondson, and MacSoft's Al Schilling. The article discusses at the game's obvious inspiration taken from TV car chases, the use of realistic city scenes and Driver's mission-based story line. Hints are even dropped about a Mac port of the sequel (Driver 2, recently released for PC and Playstation), though no definite confirmation is given. Here's a clip:

With a nice assortment of games on the way from MacSoft in 2001 and Mac OS X on the horizon, Schilling thinks that the state of Mac gaming “is good and getting better. OS X will be great, not only for games, but for all Mac applications. Features like protected memory will make an already stable OS that much better.”

Driver 2 was recently released for Windows, but Schilling will only respond “Stay tuned” when asked about the possibility of bringing it to the Macintosh, so players who enjoy this game can likely look forward to seeing the sequel as well.

Parsec SDK Thesis Available

The 16-chapter thesis, which will be included in Parsec's SDK, details the inner workings of Parsec. Everything from networking to 3D graphics API's to instructions on constructing a 3D game engine is described. The thesis is in PDF format.

Parsec is a cross-platform multiplayer space combat game being created by a group of independent game developers. A self-running demo and LAN test were released several months ago, but the Parsec team has been relatively quiet ever since. They are working toward a final release for three platforms (MacOS, Windows, Linux) and three 3D API's (Glide, OpenGL, Direct3D). The game itself will be "commercial-quality freeware," and is quite a visual and audio treat to play; however there is no set date for completion of the project.

Oni Special Move Feature

In anticipation of Oni's January 31st ship date, Gathering of Developers has updated their official site with an "Oni Special Move Feature." For each day until Oni's release, GoD will be revealing one of Konoko's special moves (which she learns at a steady pace throughout the game) with a short in-game movie and instructions on how to pull off the move. If nothing else, the Oni web site is of chock full of nifty Flash animation, so make sure you have the Flash plug-in installed. Note the outdated screen shots which feature 'blood' that sticks to the floor and walls, a 'feature' removed from the final game.

The game has proven very popular with our readers and visitors, garnering an average rating of 4.5 joysticks and over 13,000 downloads so far. If you haven't done so already, download the Oni demo today to get a taste of Konoko's arsenal of bone-crunching martial arts moves.
