So, after 28 hours of Pillars of Eternity, I am putting it down. It looks great, it plays quite nicely, but... It is completely overloaded with lore to an extend where I have simply given up following most that happens, and that ruins the game for me. There are continuously an abundance of places, characters, gods, events, etc. that is being referenced, and I simply can't keep up. I really liked the plot in the beginning, but it has become WAY too complex for me to care. At the same time there are so many different character types, that all comes with a truck load of skills and spells, that all work in weird ways, it just becomes boring. It looks great, plays great, and have some very nice quality of life things compared to the old school RPGs that it tries to copy. And other than the above thing, I think the only real complaint I have, is about the inventory. You get soooo much loot, and you don't know what to keep and what not to keep. There is not really a way of comparing items when they are in your stash, so you are moving items back and forth all the time to compare them, and since you get a LOT of items, you have to do this with all your characters, and it becomes a real chore. I understand where they wanted to go with this game, but short of the real die hard RPG fans, I think they made it too convoluted, which is a pity. I will likely give PoE2 a spin some time, but not in the foreseeable future. [hr] Instead of PoE, I was looking for something smaller and my choice went to Deep Space Derelicts, which I think I've gotten for free from GOG - Thank you! You have a crew of 3 characters, with different skill classes, and then with a plot as shallow as piece of paper, you fly out to these derelict spaceships, and explore them. It is a very indie game, which you can see from the gameplay, which is simple - Move around in the top down view of each derelict, encounter monsters and evil humans, find a few interactive spots, and try to find the data console on each ship to learn where it has been. Fighting is done through random cards, that are dealt based on what weapons you are carrying. Better weapons, better cards. AI seems... Okay? I really dig the art style, and the rogue-like gameplay is fun enough, albeit a bit shallow. It is very simple overall, go to derelict and kill creatures, go back and heal and sell loot. Perhaps buy some loot. Repeat for 10 derelicts, so not too long a game. What I don't like is the inventory management, and the bugs associated with it. Click on a an item and then compare it with your carried items, and then just guess if it is better or not based on the simple stats. Unfortunately you quite often run into a situation where the game won't let you close the window showing the weapon stats, which is FREAKING annoying! And some items you just can't equip, because....? No idea. You learn pretty much nothing about the game from the game itself, and the glossary in the settings conveniently lack all those aspects which are actually hard to understand. So you have to hit up the internet for an explanation for those. Also, the top down view of the derelicts is *extremely* simple, and frankly extremely boring. Grey blocks with simple grey icons on a black background, and since you spend most of your time there, it is quite sad. I wish they'd spend some more time making that way more interesting. It has 2 DLCs, but frankly I will skip those, even though they are only 1$, because the game is not interesting enough story and gameplay wise to add more of it on top. If you are starting the game from scratch though, I think I would recommend you get those from the start though, at that price, as they add quite a bit. Rating: 3,5/5. |
