Your Thoughts on Beans

So, with the new forum system, there isn't really a quick "Give Beans" button anymore. There is now a "Reputation +" where you can give a person some + + numbers.

This can be disabled entirely. I'm not sure it can be rewritten to be a simpler beans system like we used to have.

This also means all prior beans given on individual posts/replies are gone. OH NOES!! Anyways...

This discussion here is if you guys are really upset over it. Can live with the new system. Don't want any system in place. Or maybe want me to try and find some plugin which someone else wrote that comes close to the old beans system (might exist, dunno).

Eh, I'm not all that bothered by the loss of beans, but it was a useful indicator that folks had acknowledged and/or appreciated your post.

I think the new reputation system more or less does the same job; it's not like we need bragging rights over other forum members (we're a tight crew, right guys?), but if there's an option to keep rep ratings private that might be preferred by some.

I don’t think it’s as useful anymore because there’s no indication on the post itself that someone rated it +1. You have to click on the poster’s reputation number (which is an overall reputation number, not post-specific) to view ratings, and then click on the rating someone gave to see where it leads. I am never going to do that.

So I would be in favor of trying to find some plugin that replicates the old functionality. But I agree it’s not a major loss. And I do like you can write a quick comment along with your +1 if you want.

Dang.... one of those plugins that doesnt just do what it should, but adds in a ton of other things and a whole helping of nonsense changes. Its like when you find a mod for a bethesda game that actually finally adds lightweight arrows ... but it ALSO adds weightless bottles, physics changes, and a reskin of the world on top.

Not sure if I can dissect out just part, depends how the plugin was made.

However back to what you were saying: Yeah, I totally agree trying to hunt down if someone said 'thanks' or 'thumbsup' on just a post/reply... is not something anyone would want to do. It needs to just show up on the post itself showing someone was like 'yup! cool'.

I'll see about trying that plugin. Its kind of messy with its implementation (not just a plugin, but multiple stray files that go in various directories), but if it works, it works. Need to do a full db dupe and server tarball first in case Really bad Things™ happen.

Plugin took a few minutes to alter the database on my staging server, and it seems to work ok... lots of settings to customize it. Will have to adjust its theme/skin since the base theme I built this off doesn't have any tweaks in place.

However it does seem like a possibility!

Ok, bean system added for posts.

Under each post is a thumbs up button with "Like" in it (I can change that to Beans if we want). Clicking it adds a + beans, and your avatar will show up on the bottom of the post in question in the "Gave beans:" section.

Its tied into the rep system as well, so giving beans, will +1 the users rep with a note of "Beans!". Kind of helpful I guess.

Theres also something called "Trophy Post"..... totally unsure what that is, or where it shows up. It said something about the user profile, but I'm not seeing it. Might be masked out in this theme I'm working from, might be missing code. I'll dig around a bit for it.

Anyhow... there ya go... beans system back in place  Sorry about all the lost beans though! They are in a jar, and the user who can guess just how many beans there are... gets a bean.

LOL... oh man, I couldn't purge private messages properly. I would have if I knew how to specifically pluck the right ones and all the table ties.

I coulda just waxed every PM, but I know some people wouldn't have liked that.

I saw a couple of delightful old messages about one of my IdevGames entries, so I'm not sorry they showed up. Made my day actually, once I realized why they were in my inbox again.
