Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard game compatibility results so far
#1
I have been running through my games on my Power Mac G5 to see which break with Leopard. A did an erase and install of 10.5 and dragged across the games from my Tiger 10.4.10 install on my second internal drive along with associated user preferences and Application support folders.

Problems:

Alias Underground - quits on launch - Error message in console say incorrect version of Java.

Aliens versus Predator 2 - black screen after splash screens - had to force quit

Big Bang Chess - fails to launch

BloodRayne - movies don't play corrupt display - takes about 5 minutes to get a resolution to run. Once running works OK. Left the graphics of my stacks in the dock corrupted after leaving the game. A log out was require to fix this.

Fakk2 (Omni beta patch) - launches and plays intro movie but crashes with a bus error on loading first level.

Freecraft - crashes on launch

Flight Gear fails to launch - had to force quit

Giants - crashes on launch (credit IPY da Pinhead)

GL-117 crashes on launch

Indiana Jones - crashed on launch

Marathon Eternal - not supported on this architecture error

MTX runs OK but pressing "w" key pauses game - goes back to menu - should be the key for "accelerate".

Myth2 - ran fine but crashed on quitting

007 Nightfire - crashed on launch

NOLF - runs but objects and characters have no textures - they are just plain colours.

NOLF 2 - runs but weird rendering problems with long shapes coming out of weapons and other characters - not really playable. Crashes on Exiting " Omni Group Crash Catcher" which itself locks up and needs force quitting (Same as SOF2). May work on some NVIDIA cards?

Rally shift - no control of mouse cursor when entering menus. Can get it back by force quit key combination but it will force quit any applications left running in the background (I had text Edit and console open).

Rick Dangerous - can't find SDL library even after I reinstalled the latest version?

Rise of the Triad - quits on launch

SimCiy 4/Rush Hour - crashes after entering a city (Credit Atomic Glee)

Soldier of Fortune 2 - works OK but crashes on exit - have to force quit to get out.

Spy Hunter - Crashes on launch.

Star Trek EF Single Player says please insert the CD when it is in the drive already or crashes on launch with expansion CD in drive. Holomatch multiplayer works fine however.

StarWars Galactic Battlegrounds - Black screen on Intel Macs.

Tron 2 - crashed on launch

Tux Racer - crash on launch

Nice list! (although it is disappointing in the other sense...).

This should be a sticky.

Command & Conquer 3: The installer for the 1.0.8 patch does not work, but if you install the patch on another computer with Tiger and copy the game back onto your Leopard system it works fine.

Age Of Mythology: Works Fine with Binary Patch

Age Of Empires II: Works Fine

Halo: Works fine

Call Of Duty 2: It still stutters a but like it did on Tiger with the 8600, but not as much

Battlefield 2142: Runs ok, it Crashed once while joining a game

System Tested on:

MacBook Pro 2.2ghz

128mb NVidia 8600

I'm skeptical about the amount of crashes reported so far. Firstly, it's a slightly dodgy comparison to just drag across Library contents from a previous install, and secondly, I can't help but feel that some of these developers were doing a spot of sacrificing stability for speed, which is only now coming undone.

I have edited my list above to add a few more problems. It seems the main issues are with the Omni game ports NOLF, SOF2, AvP2 etc. I guess there is no chance of patches as I don't believe they do games now and MacPlay are also not involved with ports anymore either if I recall. This is a real shame as I loved the NOLF series.

In terms of what works fine here is what I have tested so far:

4x4 Evo 2

Abuse (OS X port)

AOE 2

AOE 3

Alchemy Deluxe

Aliens Versus Predator 1

Alice

I think so too.

Mattw, if you agree to keep updating your thread while it remains relevant, I will pin the topic to the top of the Mac OS Related forum. You can't keep editing your first post but I can. We can work it like this, you keep your list of what works and what doesn't up to date in a text editor file. Whenever you want to update the sticky with new information then send me a PM with the exact data copy-and-pasted from your text file. I'll edit your first post in this thread for you and overwrite the post with your new data.

One game definitely seems to profit from Leopard: KotOR.

Woo! I'm currently playing KotOR, so good news for me (I didn't even know there was an issue on Dantooine, but I'm not there yet.)

There's AvP2 for mac?! with or without expansion? Does Multiplayer work between mac and PC?
Reply

#14
yes, without and no.

and its pretty broken these days, i believe.. thanks to the games inexplicable reliance on changeable code in OSX and quicktime.

Darn. I was looking forward to MP on that one..

I was under the impression that some of these games were busted under 10.4 as well (some the MacPlay ones for sure). It would be good to run the broken games under 10.4.10 on the same (or similar) setup to determine if they worked immediately before the Leopard upgrade.

Flight Gear runs fine for me on my Macbook pro.

Need for Speed Carbon has problems: Black screen, sounds plays fine.

Thanks for the list! But that's PowerPC only, right?

Anyone want to start testing on Intel Macs?

UT2004 will NOT launch (dyld: Library not loaded: @executable_path/libSDL-1.2.0.dylib) on my Intel Mac with Leopard

EDIT: Prey and Quake 4 (Demo) are fine on Intel.

I can confirm that Aliens vs. Predator 2 no longer works with OS X on Leopard.

I made a post about it on MacRumors in the hope someone will come up with a fix, just like someone did with the multiplayer issue.

If you are on Tiger you can get the Multiplayer fix from this link below.

Of the MacPlay games AvP2 (Single player), NOLF, NOLF 2 and TRON 2 all worked under Tiger for me (I can't say under 10.4.10 specifically as I hadn't launched them that recently). I'll get around to booting Tiger again at some point (probably when 10.4.11 is released) and I'll try to remember to test them all again. NOLF and NOLF 2 do still run but the graphics anomalies make them unplayable. I'm sure they would be fixable if MacPlay were still in the business. NOLF 2 in particular I initial though was OK as the scenery was rendered fine. It was only when I took out a weapon and when I then encountered other characters I realised something was wrong. It did also crash on exiting with the same error as Soldier Of Fortune 2:

Exception Type: EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP)

TRON 2 gives a crash log that says: Exception Type: EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL), Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000002, 0x00000000006b541c, Crashed Thread: 0

With Aliens Versus Predator 2 there is no log as I had to force quit as the screen just stayed black after the splash screen.
