Monitor suggestions?
(12-30-2024, 04:52 AM)Thain Esh Kelch Wrote: LG just announced this one this morning, as expected. 34” and 39” editions are expected at CES next year. It is my personal endgame monitor at the lower sizes (Or an equivalent with the same panel from a different producer).

5k2k OLED, 45”, 165hz, DP2.1, 90W PD, new pixel structure for improved text clarity, and it is bendable!

Interesting - looks pretty cool. 45" will be more than I want, but I could see 34" being pretty ideal with those features

I think in the meantime I will probably see if I can find a 34" 3440x1440 monitor that seems to have clear enough text. Seems like the ideal size for both gaming, width I'm looking for for work, and not having to deal with odd MacOS resolution scaling weirdness and blurred text.

Looks like this one could fit the bill nicely: https://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-38wr85qc-w-ultrawide-monitor#pdp_specs. Rtings hasn't reviewed it, but they seemed to really like the predecessor which seems like it has everything I wanted except VRR doesn't work over USC-C/Thunderbolt, which is really annoying: https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/lg/38wn95c-w

Ended up ordering the LG 38WR85QC-W. Will see how it goes when it arrives in a couple days. Feel like the text sharpness and DPI should be fine for me, since it is effectively the same DPI as my current 27" monitor I'm using, which isn't as sharp as my MBP laptop screen, but perfectly fine to me and I've been using it for 7 years without issue. Plus the 3840x1600 resolution is going to be much easier for gaming stuff than 4k/5k would be.

I think you'll be happy with it. Like you noted, the DPI is 111 which is in the Mac "sweet spot" of ~110.

FWIW the LG ultrawide I bought after starting this thread, LG 34GK950F-B, has DPI 109. I'm still happy with it, for work and Mac/Xbox gaming. It did require that warranty repair that I mentioned earlier in the thread (which required sending it in twice.) But all has been well since then. Recently I mounted it on an arm, and bought an 8K HDMI switch so I no longer have to use the 4-way switch to switch between sources. (Not that the monitor is 8k; it's just so I can go above 60 Hz at high resolutions, and also I vaguely recall losing some 60 Hz resolutions when I tried a 4k switch).

Let us know how it goes. Good luck!

Thanks, will keep you posted when it arrives. Great to hear you are still liking yours - hoping this will be great for work and gaming for the foreseeable future!

This monitor is pretty awesome. Almost overwhelmingly large and I'm figuring out how to use it properly for work, how to arrange all the windows, etc. Played an FPS game for an hour last night and it was excellent for that as well. Only downside thus far is I also got a standing desk attachment and in the standing position it is great, but in the seated position the monitor is now too high causing me to have to look up too much. If I end up liking the standing part I'll probably need to get a VESA arm so I can put the monitor 5" or so lower than the stand allows when I'm in the seated position of the desk.

We are closing in on close-to-perfect displays, finally. LG just announced a 6k3k 32" display, with Thunderbolt 5 hub, and practically borderless, and gorgeous, design (Stand hideous though!). Price and refresh rate not known at this point, but I'll wager 60hz (Boo!) and LG says it will be consumer targeted price wise, so that's at least nice.

And Hisense is close to shipping a TV with 97% of BT.2020, and another with micro-LEDs at 95% of BT.2020. That's awesome, because it means we are getting closer and closer to optimal color representation in display panels. Smile

I saw that this morning - looks awesome, especially if it is 120hz and has a consumer-friendly price (which I guess at this point likely means $1500-2000, so I'd be hard-pressed to call that "friendly", but at least it wouldn't be $4000+)
