I see the Steam version got a (2014?) update that requires macOS 10.9 or newer. Before I buy... Anyone tried it lately?
Does it run on Ventura? And on Apple Silicon (via Rosetta)? Can you host a server for others to join?
TIA!
(I was also watching Descent: Underground—now titled Ships That Fight Underground. But Mac support seems to no longer be listed.)

I think I own D3 through GOG, so maybe that one will get updated too. If so I'll have a look. I think I last ran it through WINE or Crossover, so maybe its just got a new wrapper on it.
You know about Overload already, Nagromme? Seems to me you probably would. If not, you should check it out. Unlike D:U, it actually shipped a finished product though the studio folded after that. But there's a small community keeping the multiplayer going and adding maps.

Thanks for the reminder. It was on my Steam wishlist, but I'd forgotten about it! I don't want to pay TOO much for a non-Apple-Silicon-native game which will (eventually, not soon) stop working once Rosetta 2 is dropped. But I'll probably pick that one up. A modern Descent would be great to have!
Does Overload run OK in Ventura and Rosetta 2, anyone know? It states 10.6+.
Also, I should have asked from the start... are the current Descent 3 (and Overload!) notarized to run without bypassing Gatekeeper? I am very reluctant to install unsigned apps.
Meanwhile at least I have an old Luxo-style iMac G4 with D3 installed... it might even still boot!

I tried it maxed out on an M2 MacBook Pro at 3440x1440, and it ran smooth as silk, though it did make the laptop fans run loudly.
According to this technique it isn't signed (Steam install).

Cool! Thanks for checking! (That's my machine—it would be a fun novelty to hear actual fans!)

True, updated the Steam page doesn't list Mac. I asked them about it on Discord just this week, and they said that they would not be supporting Mac in the open beta which is now due to start on Monday, but still plan to ship the full game for Mac.
They also said that people like me who backed the kickstarter will still get their free copy. I haven't been getting their emails so I wonder if I got dropped off the list somehow. Guess we'll see..

That's very cool to hear! Making Mac support a later-phase task is not unreasonable for a small team.

Open-sourced Descent 3 engine has gotten its first public release.
https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2024/08/descent-3-open-source-project-gets-a-first-release/
It includes 64-bit binaries for Win, Linux, Mac Intel and Apple Silicon. Their future plans include a graphics renderer rewrite, support for higher screen resolutions, localization support improvements and more.
(I personally have not gotten it to work on my Intel Mac yet. To get the assets out of the Windows game (which I already own) you have to install it somehow. They recommend using SteamCMD or SteamPlay. I installed it using Crossover and copied the assets out of the bottle. But I get an error when I unzipped and ran the new engine - "application cannot be opened". It doesn't seem to be caused by Gatekeeper or missing executable permission, so I'm not sure what's going on. I'll try again another time.)
Gave beans:

Looks like they are now aware of the problem with the Mac version not launching from Finder: https://github.com/DescentDevelopers/Descent3/issues/532
The workaround isn't great: you have to set a file permission, put the game assets in a weird place, then run it from terminal. "This will be a priority for [the next release]"
