While fighting the boss at the end of the level, I recommend using the laser as it does more damage and fires more rapidly while the spread and plasma do better when a lot of enemies are swarming you. The final key to press during the game is Rage. Rage makes your lancer move faster, have stronger shields, and do more damage. Another interesting feature is the ability to choose one of three different lancers to play. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses and you can find one that fits in nicely with your own personal playing style. At the end of each level you also get an opportunity to upgrade your lancer. You can buy better weapons, shields, and rage making your lancer better. This is a nice feature that I have never seen before in this genre.

The more Cherries you kill, the more power ups that become available to you. Like most games in the genre, if you destroy a unit of attackers, usually 3 to 5, you get a power up that floats around where the last enemy was destroyed. These power ups increase the speed of your fire, give you extra shielding, new fire types, and more. It is very important to grab those power ups when you see them. Be careful though, most of my damage resulted from mad dash movements to grab some juicy power up before it floated off the screen.

Active Lancer has a great two-player feature where two people can play on one keyboard. It is a lot of fun but I recommend you use an extended keyboard as I kept bumping hands while trying to play it on a standard Apple keyboard. Also, it does support network play but does not recommend Internet play, even on broadband connections.

Value
Active Lancer is a great value. It offers intense arcade action with quality sound and cut scenes at a bargain price. The production values on this game are very high separating it from other arcade type games available on the Mac.

Active Lancer has many great features and recreates the feel of a true arcade game. The longer I played I was able to figure out certain patterns of the enemy which made the game easier. Also, make sure to download the patch since the game is near impossible without it. The 1.0.1 update adds more power ups making the game much more enjoyable. I would like to be able to use a different input device other than the keyboard. My keyboard sure takes a beating when I play Active Lancer and control pad or joystick support would greatly improve game play.

Bottom line: If you are a fan of the vertical scrolling shooter genre, Active Lancer is a must buy.
