Harry Potter is everywhere. What began in literature has spawned action figures, cinema, jellybeans, and bed sheets. People have found that being drawn into J.K Rowling's magical world is really quite entertaining. Continuing the merchandise progression, Aspyr has pixilated our favorite little wizard for his first adventure game. So, let's take control of Mr. Potter, and find out if we have the cobbles to battle "You-Know-Who"?

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone follows the same story line as the identically titled book/movie. Thrust into a world of magic that was previously unknown to him, Harry uncovers his past as he begins to comprehend his future. The highly imaginative backdrop creates a storyline that lends itself well to the creation of the game.

After a rather long series of stills that summarize the first few chapters of the novel, you begin the game at the entrance to Hogwarts castle. Dumbledore (one of the many characters you encounter) gives you some quick advice on the unpredictability of Hogwarts. Later, the Weasly's show Harry how to survive his first year of magical education.

Other than using magic, Harry must use his rather surprising athletic prowess to navigate the school. You have to jump large gaps, and pull yourself unto ledges more often than you use spells. This is the only way to get to many of the hidden items all over Hogwarts. If you're scared of heights, don't worry because Harry can't die. Once your health meter reached zero, Harry will faint. After this mild setback, you spring back into action at the last save point. While this avoids a bit of in game frustration, it also tends to shorten the length of the game.

After you figure out the physical basics, you begin a series of learning spells and running courses that test the new skills. The first spell you will be taught is Flipendo, which is a knock-back charm. In order to learn any spell you have to trace a pattern with the mouse within a specific time period. Once you've learnt the charm, Harry is sent into proving grounds. Here you will utilize the new spell to solve puzzles and reveal secrets.

Spells are wielded easily . As you hold down the mouse button, a sparkling target for the spell appears. When you drag the "crosshair" onto items and creatures, they will light up and shimmer if you are able to use magic. This means there is no selection of spells as the useable charm is automatically selected. These features make the game much more accessible to the younger audience at which this game is clearly aiming.
