|Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force Expansion Pack|
December 13, 2001 | Richard Hallas
A year after Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force made its way onto the Mac, its expansion pack has arrived. The original Elite Force was a fantastic game, and gained a lot of fans on both the PC and Mac, but it left many players wanting more. For a start, the single player game seemed quite short, and players wished that they could explore the decks of Voyager at their leisure, rather than being able to go only where the game happened to send them. And there were a few other niggles, like the fact that Seven of Nine's voice was recorded by a sound-alike rather than the real actress.
The Elite Force Expansion Pack seeks to address these and other shortcomings and to give players a more rounded experience in general.
In the packIn order to use the expansion pack you do, of course, also need the original game. The expansion CD contains an updater which will patch your existing copy of the game to the version 1.2 code (now compatible with Mac OS X) and install all the necessary extra files, which together increase the game's disk space requirements to something around the 700MB mark. In terms of extra features, here's what the expansion pack gives you:New multiplayer options for Holomatch: Action Hero, Assimilation, Disintegration and Elimination modes, and Specialties which allow you to choose your player class.
Virtual Voyager: explore various decks of Voyager, including the bridge, transporter room, astrometrics, sick bay, crew quarters and many other areas, some familiar from the main game and some new, finding various secrets and playing sub-games along the way.
New single-player missions: in the holodeck of Virtual Voyager you can find two major new single-player missions, plus lesser extras such as Voyager's firing range for target practice.
Jeri Ryan voice pack: Seven of Nine's voice sounds authentic at last, thanks to the real actress recording her dialogue.
New equipment: in Virtual Voyager mode you're able to use a tricorder and a special Captain Proton Pistol.
New maps, models and skins for multiplayer mode: sixteen new multiplayer maps, plus a further five third-party maps produced by the Elite Force online community, and twelve new character models, including Boothby (the gardener from Federation HQ), Borgified-Janeway and various Captain Proton characters.
CD extras: artwork, wallpaper and promotional material.
Let's take a look at some of those things in more detail.
