The 4th continues!

Around here in this remote little town in the middle of nowhere with hundreds of people living in the community around two lakes, they celebrate the 4th of July MORE so on the following weekend. The community association hires out a pro to give off a large fireworks display down at the dam, and everyone floats their boat out to watch. It was your typical low key pro display with some large shells and some ground displays. Nothing overly spectacular, lasted about 50 minutes.

However the really fun part, was riding in the boat all the way back to the other end of the lake where the dock is. People were shooting off everything you could imagine all along the sides of the lake from their docks. It was like running a gauntlet, and in some places reminiscent of the Pirates of the Caribbean Ride at Disneyland. It was something I did not expect, as this is the first July I have been out here.

Farscape Woohoo!

While watching the only show on the SciFi channel worth watching last friday night, I saw a preview for Farscape to continue in October! I was thrilled. Because apart from SG1, SciFi had only one other good show before they decide to unevently cancel it (for the 3rd, 4th time?). Anyhow, looks like they are going to pick up where it left off. It may be cool, it may not be... because honestly, without John Criton in the series, what's the point? Kind of hard to bring him back after being completely disolved along with Erin Sun. Guess we'll see! It's Farscape after all!

After the 4th

Well, after seeing a weekend of the 4th of July out around where I live now, I realize that NOBODY cares about that "Stupid Law #2" mentioned earlier. People on every point of the lake were shooting off the biggest most heinous bombshells you could buy. One point actually had so many that the lake filled with boats of people out watching it.

It was crazy fun to see the majority of Americans out here ignoring yet another stupid law!

Stupid Laws #2

Most people who know me, know that I am fairly intolerant of stupid laws that are only made to protect people from themselves, and in turn usually 'ruin it for everyone else'.

Well, in this chapter, and this time of year, I talk about the Fireworks Law here.

Our state has a law of being able to buy any kind of firework. From little pops and sparklers, to big massive explosive devices capable of bringing down a house. However this same law prohibits people from using them in the state unless you hunt down a rare spot where you pay to get in and are allowed to fire off the fireworks under strict nazi supervision of fire chiefs and other government officials. Of course these spots are far and few, and get so jam packed with people, that it is no more fun that hunting down another rare location just to watch a public exhibit by the Zambelli's.

This is one of those laws that came about because people were being stupid and hurt themselves, so the government decided to ruin the fun for all the other people who are responsible and can properly deal with fireworks on their own property.

It's our American right to celebrate the day of INDEPENDENCE from a ruling force. Yet they put these laws into place that make you wonder what the whole point of being independent is all about.

Reminds me of back in grade school, when the teacher says "because someone left the lid off one glue jar, I'm not going to allow anyone else to use glue for the year".

Punish the population because of one idiot. This country is getting more and more inundated with laws like this.

Judge the individual, not the whole!

Dialup ISPs

Yes, I am a poor unfortunate sole who is forced to use dialup while waiting impatiently for DSL to reach the backwoods of where I live.

While waiting, I had signed up for a company (name withheld) that provided cheap direct dialup access without all the bullshit extra interface crap that so many other lame companies provide (names as well withheld, but you know them).

My job is to work with companies over the internet on remote servers through remote operations. Being in an office is really not required.

As the story begins, I have this one provider for a good 10 months. Various problems such as hangs on connect, busy signals, dropped connections, etc etc. Typical BS dialup behavior. This company claimed since they only dealt with modem connections (and didnít try to take on every bleeding internet service providing technology), that they directed all their attention to providing the best modem dialup service nationwide with thousands of access numbers blah blah blah. Sounded reasonable, bah.

Ok... a week ago, I'm online, doing my normal stuff, working during the day, chatting, grabbing the endless barrage of software updates that come out every bleeding week, and trying a game or two. I close up shop, put my machine to sleep and do my nightly routine of vedging out in front of a show, eating food, and heading to bed. I'm pretty predictable, and thatís about how I've used my net connection over the past 10 months.

Then the next day comes, a Friday morning, and I've got friends heading out of town that would need directions, and I've got some other unfinished business to take care of, so I jump on the computer and dial in. "Authentication Error"... Hrm... Ok... So I try the next access number. Same thing. I go through the list of 5 local numbers and they all do the same thing. Thinking their server is again screwed up, I head out to do some errands and check back later. Same junk occurring. I call in and get this completely stupid person, which, after a while of trying to convince the person that its NOT MY COMPUTER SETTINGS, nor a cause of me using a MAC, I end up hanging-up on them and calling back to get someone else.

I reach a person who seemed to have a clue, and checked on the account. Turns out my account had been flagged the night before as "An abusive and excessively used account" and has been put on ban for a week. Ok, at this point I lose it.

HOW THE HELL CAN YOU BE ABUSIVE WITH A FLIPPEN MODEM CONNECTION?! It already takes 20 times as long to DO ANYTHING with the modem, and its so slow that even if someone managed to download/upload the max of the line 24 hours a day, surely the backbone of the ISP could handle THAT. Also, the service would auto-disconnect anyone online for longer than 6 hours at a time, making it a big pain in the ass to stay connected continuously while you are away from your computer.

I always shutdown at night, and on weekends I'm rarely on, and when I am on, its mostly checking mail, and refreshing pages in a browser after an upload of code. Bunch of stupid horseshit. I tell the person to close my account, and file a formal complaint about how pathetic that is.

Not being able to get online, and not having a local friend who has internet access... I found it extremely hard to find a new ISP. I wasn't about to signup with one of those god awful 'interfaced' services, no matter how desperate I was. So, after going through the list in the phone book, and poking and prodding, I'm back online. Using a small local company that no one has heard of, and as such, its not plagued with a bunch of political corporation bullshit. Seems to be working great so far.
