Stupid Laws #3

Had an astonishing shock this last labor day weekend, while visiting my Aunt and Uncle. They live north of me here in another city.

A little bit of background first; I come from a state where hard water is a serious issue, as basically all water is recycled and disgusting. So water softeners and purifiers are basically as common as the pool in everyone's backyard. I had a house, and had also a softener of the Potassium kind (not the regular salt kind, which suck). I brought that softener with me when I moved out here, because I loved it so much and the quality of water it produced for drinking, showering, plants, etc (not to mention it was an expensive sucker).

Anyhow, where I live, you just put in the softener in a loop after the main shutoff valve and before it splits to the cold and hot water lines. This is so your hot water heater doesn't get calcified and run poorly etc. Also, now all your water in your house is cleaner, and it makes cleaning sinks and bathroom fixtures easier, as well as great for dishwashers and washing machines. You know the story and reasons for softer water (I hope).

So, I am visiting, and I went to their sink to get a drink of water. I was told that I shouldn't since the drinking water is disgusting and I should get water from a jug in their refrigerator. Well, I thought they had a water softener?! Well, they do. However the city they live in has a really stupid law. Another one of those minority groups got their way again in this crazy country which claims it is run by a democracy.

Turns out no "drinking" type water in a house can be softened. So all water from sinks cannot be softened, nor water in the dishwasher (?!), or water to the refrigerators (ice makers, water fountains). However the shower (?!), toilet, and clothes washing machine can and only be softened. The water heater cannot be softened, as hot water is supplied to sinks.

*blink*

After talking with my Uncle, apparently there is a massive maze of piping in their house to accomplish this feat. Taking softened water to some fixtures, and not others. All in the name of this stupid law. They live in a newer built home, that is designed for this. Older homes are just not allowed to have a softener put in, as they do not have the "proper piping layout" to satisfy the law, unless you hire a plumber to 'upgrade' the pipe layout.

So, now, what is the whole reason for all of this? Why are the law makers basically ruining the whole purpose of a water softener?

"Some elderly people can be harmed by the salt content in drinking water from certain water softeners."

*five hour stare*

Taking Time Away

After seeing how incredible the weather was here for a few days, I decided to take some time away from the computer and catch up on all sorts of outdoor projects that I hadn't gotten too.

The great weather lasted for about another couple weeks, only to get really hot a few days ago which then caused a crapload of rain to fall, and then it is all cool again.

I got a lot done, which was great, because the things I had to do were lingering over my head like a cartoon anvil. Funny thing is, once I got out away from the damned computer, and outside getting my hands dirty... I found it increasingly difficult to return!

I actually had to take another couple days just forcing myself to use the computer again. Working in spurts to not overload my brain. Much like getting away from doing workouts, you can't just dive back into it without some serious pain (or injury).

Makes me wonder... if I enjoy doing such manual labor, why am I programming? It may just be because I do so much programming, that it gets boring... where the manual labor comes along every now and then, and it feels refreshing. If I reversed the roles, I am sure I would find programming to be the refreshing part away from doing manual labor every week. Hmm.

Stain out the wazoo

Well, after starting the much a dreaded chore of staining the decking... I have come to the conclusion that my initial thought of 3 gallons for it all, just aint gonna cut it! So far I have used up 2 gallons of stain, and I've only done about 30 feet of 200 feet of decking. Hmm...
