As with many other Pangea titles, Nanosaur 2 also boasts an impressive amount of multiplayer gaming. Featuring side-by-side gameplay on any Mac equipped with a secondary input device, the new title will offer a mix of traditional multiplayer gaming, from Battle (Deathmatch), Race, and the ultimate favourite, Capture The Egg.

Nanosaur 2 can be played both in first person and third person mode, each with its own set of advantages. First person mode throws players in the front row of the action, however limit the dinosaur’s periphery vision, leaving him blind from attacks from behind. Third person mode, in which the camera hangs back a little from the hero, makes for a smoother ride and gives players a better view of the surrounding area, however this view makes it harder for players to distinguish depth.

That’s where the game’s 3D glasses come in.

As recently announced here at IMG, Pangea’s Nanosaur 2: Hatchling will be the first Mac game to feature the use of stereoscopic imagery – read: 3D glasses. Through the use of either low-tech Analglyph glasses (red- & cyan-tinted shades), or expensive computer-controlled shutter glasses, the upcoming family title will offer players the chance to literally travel through the virtual environments alongside your computerized avatar. And no need for scrounging through all the local pawn shops in order to find the 3D glasses – the boxed version of the game will include two pairs for free, while players buying the game from the Pangea website will also be offered the opportunity to purchase two pairs of the funky eyeware for a nominal fee.

Playing the game in stereoscopic mode is an experience not to be missed. Flying around the forested areas, navigating through the nets of floating mines, or under the arch of leaping sand worms, playing in 3D mode really does make players feel like they’re right there in the environment. Gameplay is possible in both black & white, which features sharper image quality, and full-colour mode. It must be noted, however, that while Nanosaur manages to avoid the corny clichés of the genre (remember the beating heart on a stake at the end of Andy Warhol’s Dracula in 3D?), the game also shares some of the technique’s idiosyncrasies. It might take new players a little while to get used to seeing their gaming environment in this new dimension. As with all 3D movies, the larger the viewing screen, the better, as the stereoscopic effect tends to fall apart when objects flying towards you leave frame. And playing in 3D has been known to give some players headaches – make sure to play in moderation.

Nanosaur 2: Hatchling is currently in Beta, and is expected to be available from the Pangea website by March 10th, with a boxed version expected to hit store shelves a few weeks afterwards.
