Spiderweb Software is celebrating its twentieth year in business. Starting with Exile: Escape from the Pit and continuing through to its most recent Avadon series, the company has been pleasing fans of old school role playing games for two decades. Later this year Spiderweb will release its twenty-first title, Avadon 2: The Corruption.
After twenty years and twenty-one games, Spiderweb has shown that indie developers can have full, successful, lifelong careers. In 1993, Spiderweb began on their first game, Exile: Escape from the Pit. This epic tale focused heavily on plot and dialogue, setting the stage for twenty years of fantasy storytelling. The series would go on to win numerous awards and be remade twice over the years. For more information about Spiderweb's products check out the timeline below, as well as the company's website.
Spiderweb Software Game Timeline
The way games are developed has changed a lot over the years, but much stays the same. Spiderweb still uses graph paper and pencil to map out their games, they are still a mom-and-pop operation in their Seattle home, and the focus of their games is still deep, involving stories. Spiderweb still develops all their games for Mac and Windows, and they were very excited to expand into mobile in 2011 with Avadon: The Black Fortress. While devices, graphics, and character systems may change and improve, Spiderweb Software's commitment to excellent storytelling and complex worlds never will.
In Fall of 2013, Spiderweb will be releasing their twenty-first game, Avadon 2: The Corruption.
