Jobs Undergoes Cancer Surgery

In a unusual sidenote, Apple Computer and Pixar Animation Studios' CEO Steve Jobs underwent surgery this weekend for an unusual strain of pancreatic cancer.

Writing on his 17" PowerBook from his hospital bed, the 49-year-old CEO informed his employees and members of the press of his current fight with the rare disease:

This weekend I underwent a successful surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from my pancreas. I had a very rare form of pancreatic cancer called an islet cell neuroendocrine tumor, which represents about 1 percent of the total cases of pancreatic cancer diagnosed each year, and can be cured by surgical removal if diagnosed in time (mine was).
Speaking on the success of the operation, Jobs wrote that he will not require any chemotherapy or additional radiation treatments. Jobs further explained that his form of pancreatic cancer was not the more common adenocarcinoma cancer, which sadly has a life expectancy of only about twelve months after diagnosis -
I mention this because when one hears 'pancreatic cancer' (or Googles it), one immediately encounters this far more common and deadly form, which, thank god, is not what I had.
In a telephone interview on the subject, Apple board member Bill Campbell backed the CEO's view on the operation, saying that Jobs' doctors are very confident that the surgery was successful, and that Jobs' prognosis is excellent.

Jobs, who will remain in hospital for the month of August, has asked Tim Cook, head of worldwide sales and operations, to take over as interim CEO until his return in September. Cook, confident on the successful recovery of his CEO, joked about the possibility that Jobs wouldn't let things run for too long without checking in -

My guess is I'll be hearing a lot from him beginning tomorrow.
