Falcon 4 enthusiast Rick Prior and the rest of the team at the Mac Falcon 4 Website have released version 4.08 of the Falcon 4 Realism Patch. The Realism Patch is a community effort to keep Falcon 4 alive by adding new vehicles and weapons to the game, as well as improving the realism of the game by altering vehicle and weapon specifications.
Version 4.08 introduces the following new weapons to game: the French missiles Magic and Mica (both radar and IR variants), the AA-3 and AS-15, and the 1000-liter fuel tank. The Mk. 82 and BSU-49 bombs have updated models. In addition, the following aircraft have new models and/or texture maps: the French Rafale-B, Mirage 2000, JAS-39 Gripen, SuperEtendard, JAS-37 Viggen, Jaguar, the American A-6E, and the Soviet Su-17 'Fitter.'
Along with the new weapons and aircraft models, AI pilots now correctly call out aircraft names where they previously did not, and the Tactical Reference database has been updated with the new French aircraft and weapons. Rick Prior indicates that new theaters will be arriving soon for Mac Falcon 4; in particular, Vietnam and Desert Storm.
Falcon 4, originally developed by Microprose/Hasbro and ported by Westlake Interactive, long the most realistic combat flight simulator available for Macintosh, has had a troubled history on this platform. Where it does succeed is accurately simulating the F-16 Fighting Falcon as a small part of a campaign over Korea; however, multiple bugs and a lack of support prevent it from being a fully-stable product. Community efforts such as the Realism Patch continue to breathe life into this legacy.
