Austin Meyer, author of the ultra-realistic flight simulator X-Plane, recently released another ultra-realistic flight simulator. The only catch is: it's in space. Featuring realistic physics and graphics, Space Combat, is meant to simulate what it's like to fly a science-fiction spaceship, all on your Mac.
In-game objectives vary from dodging asteroids to going through gates. You can also create your own regions of play using the included region generator. While mostly oriented on the experience of flying a realistically-made spaceship, the game does feature a newly added combat mode.
What motivated Meyer to make a space combat game? According to his website, he had always wanted to fly a really spaceship, but had realized that computer games were a great medium to live out his fantasies:
I often watch Star Wars, Star Trek, and Babylon 5 and wonder how those spaceships really should handle.Space Combat is available for download for Mac at the link below. A PC version is also available on Space Combat's website.
