The prolific team headquatered at the Mac Falcon 4 website, led by enthusiast and self-taught Falcon 4 expert Rick Prior, has released version 4.07 of their flagship product, the Falcon 4 Realism Patch. This patch makes significant changes to the venerable flight sim in the interest of increasing its realism and accuracy, and adding additional vehicles and weapons.
Version 4.07 of the Realism Patch adds new models for the MiG-21 "Fishbed" and the Su-25 "Frogfoot", derived from the increasingly complex 3D models used in the SuperPak, a patch for the Windows version of Falcon 4. In addition, new models for the F/A-18E Super Hornet, the RC-135 Rivet Joint, the P-3 Orion, and the Mi-28 "Havoc" have been added. Along with these graphical changes are modifications to the flight model and radio communicaitons.
The Realism Patch is an ongoing community effort to keep Falcon 4 alive. The flight sim, wrought with bugs at its initial release, has had a troubled history on the Macintosh. Although official development of Falcon 4 has ended, Rick Prior and others have busily come up with ways of modifying the game to reduce bugs and increase playability. Previous versions of the Realism Patch have added a sizable number of airplanes and weapons, and made a host of other modifications.
Falcon 4 holds a special place in the annals of Macintosh flight sim history as the most intensely realistic modern combat simulation ever to grace the platform. The simulation places pilots at the controls of the US Air Force's F-16 Fighting Falcon in a realistic simulation of modern warfare over Korea.
