G5 Speed Bump Predictions 9:22 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story
Forbes.com has posted an article speculating on the near future of the PowerMac G5, the current flagship of Apple's desktop computers. The main bulk of the speculation comes from IBM affirming that it's ready to ship its latest version of the PowerPC processor by the end of the year: The main improvement to the PowerPC chip, known internally at IBM as the PowerPC 970fx, will be a reduction of the features on the chip itself, from sizes of 130 nanometers to 90 nanometers. Shrinking the features on the chip allows it to consume less power even as it speeds up, making it easier to cool and easier to use. Also noted is the possibility of a new compiler technology tailored to PowerPC technology that, if used, may see as much as a 50% increase in speeds.Of course, this is all currently just speculation, but it is exciting to think about the speed possibilities available to Mac users in the near future.
