Gaming site IGN PC recently flew out a representative to Wolfpack Studios in order to take a close look at Shadowbane, a MMORPG currently in development that features a player-driven world and massive PvP battles. IGN PC notes that the current build is feature complete, and reveals a wealth of information regarding this upcoming title.

As many gamers waiting for this title are aware, guild-based combat is a staple of Shadowbane. During beta testing, Wolfpack noticed that a single guild managed to dominate the world during the first run. Testing to see whether it would happen again, the servers were reset. Sure enough, a single guild once again rose to utter dominance. Rather than reset the world again, Wolfpack just let it ride, which brought about an interesting result:

That's when things got interesting. With no one to challenge their power, it seemed the reigning guild could maintain their dominance forever. But a rift eventually developed within the guild and one group of players split off and started their own town. A third group took advantage of the situation to make their own bid for power and with these three major players now focused on each other, smaller cities were able to gain ground and reach a point where they started to pose a threat to the previously dominant guild.
Testing has also shown that Shadowbane builds a strong sense of community through its Tree of Life concept, which forms the center of every guild. As players will perform nearly all their basic tasks around their Tree, players sharing the same guild will quickly become familiar with each other. This concept, notes founder Todd Coleman, has been very successful in building a "sense of territoriality," particularly when being attacked by a rival guild.

The rest of the preview covers further experiences generated during the beta tests, the control scheme for character levels and the power that can be accumulated, and the newbie island, which harbors new players and allows them to build up to a respectable level before venturing out into the world. Those interested in the full read can find it at IGN PC.
