Unreal II: The Awakening Previewed
6:00 AM | Galen Wiley | Comment on this story

IGN PC has posted a new preview of Legend Entertainment and Infogrames' upcoming title, Unreal II: The Awakening.

Unreal II is the much anticipated sequel to the original Unreal. Featuring totally revamped graphics, squad-based action, and a slew of new characters and creatures. In this particular preview, IGN talks about various details and information, including some new players will face:

The bad guys come in all shapes and forms from the Skaarj that we all know and hate so well to the new bad boys on the block, a bio-mechanical race who's name will remain a mystery for the time being. They're one of the main plot elements as well giving reason for The Awakening part of the title. They've been asleep for a while and somebody was dumb enough to wake them up. Sporting an impressive array of weapons and fighting units, you'll have to deal with these guys with extreme prejudice and a healthy dose of EMP weapons that work well because of their mechanical nature. Two types of fighting aliens were present in the short bit we saw of this level. One was a ranged attacker shooting powerful laser type weapons and one was a melee type giving what I'll call the Hug of Warm and Crispy Death. They pretty much run at you, extend their mechanical arms out in what looks like an attempt to give you a hug. When the bolts of electricity start flying out in between the arms, and through your body, you may start to think their intentions weren't so loving after all.
Also revealed is more information on the various weapons you will have in your hands:
A couple of these weapons are pretty nifty pieces of work. One take the lifeless husk of certain aliens and uses them to power the weapon. So for a while, you may not really get to use the weapon because you haven't found enough "fuel" for the gun. Once you start running into the creatures a bit more, you'll be able to break it out of the case and go to town. Another one called the Leech gun uses the same principles to suck the energy out of weapons and creatures. Many of the weapons you'll have available, of which there will be around 15 when the game ships, will be Terran by nature. Expect shotguns, machine guns, pistols, rocket and grenade launchers, and the lovely flamethrower (with some of the best flame effects ever). All of these have secondary fire like the machine gun's single fire shattering bullet that does a whole bunch of damage and the rocket launcher's split fire that causes a rocket to split into four heat seeking missiles that do a little less damage each than a normal rocket. Then there's the grenade launcher which seems to be the Swiss Army Knife of weapons in this game. It's got a solution for every problem you might come across. You can switch between six types of grenades including explosive, EMP, incindiary, toxic, concussion, and smoke. Something for everybody.
The full preview offers more information, including graphical enhancements, more enemy information, and how the game is coming along. Check it out.
