Unreal Tournament 2003 Audio Q&A
6:00 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story
German Unreal Tournament fansite Unreal Tournament World has recently posted the results of an interview with Starsky Partridge of Digital Extremes concerning the upcoming FPS title Unreal Tournament 2003. Partridge is an audio guy for DE, meaning that he's responsible for all the explosions, screams, and music that occur during gameplay.
Though most of the interview focuses mainly on Partridge's career in the game music/sound industry, there are some interesting facts concerning the audio for UT2003 that may be of interest. One such fact concerns the screams and taunts that are a staple of UT, which, believe it or not, actually require professional voice actors to perform. Partridge notes that he went through a huge database of voice actors before finding people "who could scream the right way or say 'come get some' in a commanding voice."
He also adds a note about UT2003's musical score:
Hmmmm... musically my goal with this game was to create an atmosphere and pulse. I've attempted to make music that coexists rather then distracts from the playing experience. My tracks definitely get me in the mood for some hardcore fragging.Another fact that should be of interest to audio fans is that the audio for UT2003 is being recorded in Dolby Digital, which should make for some clear-sounding fragging.
For more information on Partridge's career, the equipment he uses, and more UT2003 audio facts, be sure to check out the whole interview at Unreal Tournament World.
