An observant forum poster noticed the official Deep Space Nine: The Fallen page has been updated with news that the Mac version of this third person shooter is finally shipping. [UPDATE]: Peter Binazeski of Simon and Schuster has just informed us that this update is in error, and the Mac version of DS9: The Fallen has not officially been declared "Gold" nor shipped just yet. The final version is being reviewed by Paramount right now, and Peter expects the game to go gold very soon.
The major hold-up proved to be the Miles Sound System; this sound library, which until recently was PC-only, had to be ported by a third party (Rad Game Tools) before the work on the Mac port could be completed. Now that this final step has been taken, the game
DS9: The Fallen is based on the Unreal Tournament engine, so that should give you a good idea of how the game will run on your machine. Rudimentary OS X support is also available, though only software rendering is an option for some reason. We'll follow up with The Collective and see if 3D hardware support might be coming soon.
Here are the official requirements for the game:
- CPU PowerMac™ G3 or higher
- RAM 64MB
- Hard Drive Space 150MB (650MB recommended)
- Operating System OS 8 or higher (NOTE Only runs in software mode in OS X)
- CD-ROM 4x
The game should be shipping out to stores in the next week, though you can also order it through CompuExpert now. For more info on the game, check out our preview posted back in December of last year.
