Neverwinter Nights Q&A

While extremely short, this Q&A between GA-RPG and Bioware designer Rob Bartel is an interesting read for those anticipating Neverwinter Nights, a realtime 3D RPG with a unique online component. This ambitious title will attempt to re-create the engrossing environment of pen-and-paper role-playing games by bringing the Dungeon Master back into the fold and allowing players to create, host and DM their own online dungeons.


One of the problems facing NWN, however, has been its extremely long development time; it was announced at E3 1999, and RPG fans have been begging for it ever since. Here's an excerpt with information on the delay, and the current status of the game:

The last time we had a chance to ask you about Neverwinter Nights it was late 1999, so have you made any progress on the game since then ;)? Seriously though, how far off do you feel Neverwinter is from reaching beta status, and would you consider the game at Alpha now?


Neverwinter Nights is progressing steadily but we’ve certainly come to recognize the sheer amount of effort it takes to pull off a project of this scope. As for where we’re at right now, the system itself is almost in place. We have a graphics engine, we have most of the underlying system in place for a rules engine, we have a solid networking layer, our interface is becoming increasingly present and functional, the basic art content is almost complete, and the Neverwinter Toolset will soon reach a point where the Design Team can start making final game content.

It sounds to us like an early 2002 release may not be out of the question, if Bartel isn't even willing to confirm Alpha status. Alas. In any case, expect more details about this game to arrive at this year's E3 in May. NWN will be cross-platform for Mac and PC, and should be a simultaneous release.
