Ryan Gordon has announced work on the iodoom3 project, as well as the unveiling of a website, forum, mailing list, and twitter feed for the project. Like ioquake3, the goal of the effort is to perfect the source code of id Software's Doom 3 to create a streamlined open source basis for developing new games and projects, as well as "the perfect version of the game engine for playing Doom 3."
What is iodoom3?Learn more at the site below.
On November 22, 2011 id Software released the source code to Doom 3. This project aims to build upon that source code release by cleaning up, fixing bugs, and adding features. Our permant goal is to create the open-source Doom 3 distribution upon which people base their games and projects. We also seek to have the perfect version of the game engine for playing Doom 3, itís expansion pack Resurrection of Evil, and all popular mods.
Does this mean that Doom 3 is free to play?
No. Playing Doom 3 still requires a legitimate copy of the game. You can purchase a copy from Steam or your favorite retailer.
TODO on iodoom3 itself:
TODO on services:
- Add SDL for portability on input handling and window management.
- cmake for building
- Cleanup compile-time errors
- installers for the top three platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux)
- wiki (probably mediawiki)
- site that doesnít look like a default wordpress theme
