Crispy Gamer has posted a new two part interview with Runic Games' CEO Max Shaefer, Art Director Jason Beck, and co-founder Travis Baldree about the company's upcoming action RPG, Torchlight.
The game will give players the chance to choose a character and venture from the safety of the town of Torchlight into randomly generated dungeon levels. Once inside they will find a variety of monsters, a large selection of loot to find, and quests to complete.
Crispy Gamer: Why did you decide to do an Alchemist class as opposed to a straight magic user like a Mage?Read more at the links below.
Crispy Gamer: Torchlight Q&A 1
Travis: Well we really like guns. One of the abilities we liked in Mythos was using rifles and pistols and some of the summons that we ended up doing for the Alchemist ended up having kind of a steampunk flavor. We just wanted to do something slightly different. The gameplay we want to be familiar.. you can play fairly Mage-y with an Alchemist, but itís fun to do things slightly different.
Max: We wanted to make characters that werenít totally typecasts in their roles. So the Alchemist can be played as magic user or as a combat focused type character if you want to. So we wanted to create character classes that donít imply a direct and simple specialization. Because they have strengths and emphasis but you kind of want people to do whatever they want. So if you find a really cool bow and youíre a Destroyer, you should be able to use it.
Crispy Gamer: Are drops dependant on what class you are playing? In other words, if Iím an Alchemist am I going to see more gun drops?
Travis: You can pass things back and forth now between characters so we want you to be able to get stuff for another class and hand it over to them. However, the art - especially for armor - gets customized to the class. So, if youíre playing a Vanquisher, your gear doesnít look like it belongs to a guy and vice-versa with male characters.
Crispy Gamer How do you give stuff to other characters?
Travis: We basically have a shared stash in town. We have a large pane that you can dump items into and then you can play another character and use them. So you might find something interesting on a play-through, and unlike FATE where the only way to pass it to a character was through the Retirement system, you share items at any time.
