Mac Doom Legacy Update 10:12 AM | Andy Largent | Comment on this story
An update to the Mac DoomLegacy page brings word of a new 0.4a revision for this OpenGL-enhanced version of the Doom application, which is now open-source. Sound and sprites will both work much better in this new version, and the author is still looking for Mac DoomLegacy icons/logos if you're artistically inclined. The page may be slightly difficult to read right now, so here's the update in full: First of all, Mac Legacy now has stereo sound! Plug it in to your hi-fi and enjoy. What's really annoying is that it only took about 10 minutes to sit and look through the Heretic and Quake sources before I could make the changes to the DooM source, which took another 5 minutes (and to think I have been thinking about doing it for months!).
I have also updated Mac Legacy to include the most recent changes to the Win/Linux versions. Its faster, and sprites look alot better. I was disappointed that it didn't fix the missing polys though :(. Still no software rendering/network stuff yet, but networking may come next if I can get GUSI working properly - it always seems to have missing definitions in the header files. Until I can get this working, there will be no network support.
I am still looking for icons and logos to go with Mac DooMLegacy. I have had a few sent to me, but I haven't decided on one yet.
Some users have sent me reports that tell me that Legacy may not work with the Plutonia and TNT wad files. For the moment, stick to DOOM1.WAD and DOOM2.WAD.
If you don't have the full retail version of Doom, you can still use the shareware/demo WADs to try out DoomLegacy. Download the new 0.4a update now, as it's a fairly small application, if you're feeling nostalgic.
