Hands-On With Spore

Joystiqhas published a new hands-on preview of Will Wright's upcoming god sim, Spore. Based on time spent with a near-final build of the game and comments from Maxis producer Thomas Vu, the preview provides a checklist of some of the game's features. The game will allow players to take single celled organisms from the primordial ooze to the lofty reaches of outer space, tinkering with the evolution of the creatures at every stage.

Cell Phase:
What you eat and how you evolve your cell determines what body parts you get for the creature creator. We were shown a timeline thattracked each "evolution" of your cell and whether it was more carnivorous, herbivorous or omnivorous.

Tribe Phase:
If you want your planet to be themed, you can create Sporecasts, a collection of themed creations you can call upon to propagate your planet (e.g. "Star Wars" or Muppets). Vu did not provide details on how it works, but we did talk about searching for themed creations using the Sporepedia tag system. If you don't want to use the Sporecast system, you can also let the game automagically add life to your planet.

Civilization Phase:
You will have a superpower, based your creature's behavior (presumably in the tribal phase). Vu provided examples such as the economic-focused ad banners that can fly over other cities promoting your way of life, or the religious-focused "rain of frogs," where some creature (not necessarily frogs) is dropped into an opponents city la the Egyptian plagues.

Space Phase:
The space phase is considered the RPG part of Spore, said Vu. You will be given a random batch of scripted missions to accomplish (Vu said he didn't know speciically how many missions but that there was "a lot").

On the subject of Mac support, Vu said they might make Spore compatible with the older Intel Macs (with the older graphics cards), but likely not.
