GA-RPG has posted a preview of BioWare's upcoming online RPG Neverwinter Nights, complete with two new screen shots. While this game may be at least 6 months from release, it certainly has RPG fans drooling -- and not just from the gorgeous screen shots. NWN seeks to return the community and camaraderie of pen-and-paper Dungeons and Dragons to the RPG genre, by bringing back the Dungeon Master.

Where the game really promises to shine in is its multi-player mode. The first impressive feature of the game is the pure server power it can offer: with a fast (cable or DSL) connection, BioWare expects a modern computer to be able to accommodate up to 64 players, perhaps even more! Servers can be linked, meaning that a player can step through a "portal" to go to another server, but enough of the technical jargon. Having lots of players on a server is nice, but what are the possibilities gameplay-wise?For more details on this highly anticipated game -- which will be cross platform between Mac, PC and most likely Linux -- be sure and read the rest of the preview.
Neverwinter Nights Preview at GA-RPG
One multiplayer mode that Neverwinter Nights will feature is classic competitive gameplay. This includes deathmatches, but also less common gameplay variations like castle storming and dungeon races to treasure. However, where I see the main strength of the game is in cooperative gameplay. NWN will feature modules that players can simple download and begin playing. This in itself isn't anything new. Other games published by Black Isle featured a cooperative mode (the Baldur's Gate series and Icewind Dale). The main problem with these games was that the multiplayer mode didn't really add to the single-player experience, it just seemed tacked on. Once you finished the game, it was pretty much over unless you knew some friends with the game. In order to maintain NWN's longevity, BioWare has decided to give us the option to create our own...
