Unreal Tournament 3 Hands-On Preview

Voodoo Extreme recently posted a new hands-on preview of Unreal Tournament 3, the eagerly awaited next installment in the popular first person shooter series from Epic Games. The preview gives a glimpse of what gamers can expect from the game including UT 3's Warfare mode and co-op play.

Last, but not least, we have the most complex game type featured in UT3 - Warfare. It took about 20 minutes before I had any idea what was going on, but hereís the basic run down: Two teams; both have buildings called power nodes. Interspersed around the maps are neutral points which can be captured and linked up to each other. Your goal is to capture the nodes by shooting a protective shield off around its power source, eventually pushing all the way to the opposing teamís home base. There is a twist though, you (or one of your team mates) needs to be carrying around an orb generated at your node in order to capture other nodes. Once the orb holder dies, you have X number of seconds to pick it up, or it expired. Enemy players can destroy dropped orbs as well, but the result is a suicide. Sound deep enough? Good!

One of the more interesting tidbits we stumbled upon at Epic is that Unreal Tournament 3 features 4-player online co-op. Many assumed the single player would just be just a series of linear bot matches that serve as a tutorial, but it's actually a lot deeper than that, according to a couple of the devs we had dinner with. While the campaign mode does have specific goals and set endings, how you achieve them is almost as diverse as playing a game like of Rise of Legends (moving around a campaign map picking which battles you want to fight). UT3 might not be 100% open-ended, but it's no longer a galactic sporting event. Cut scenes help develop characters and further the story. They are played as movie files -- so people with lower end machines don't see them at 10 frames per second -- but you can open up the Unreal
