Gamerz Edge is one of the latest sites to review the PC version of Civilization IV: Warlords. The first expansion for the popular world building strategy title introduces new playable nations, new scenarios, and the introduction of the special Warlord unit. Gamerz Edge gave the expansion a score of 8.5 out of 10.
From the review:
For starters, Warlords adds a new ‘great person’ class. This new ‘great person’ class is the Great General, who can be turned into a warlord. Warlords are nice because they automatically increase the ability of warriors around them, as well as their experience. At the same time, warlords aren’t all-powerful, and they can die, I have found out, pretty quickly, if not protected. The Mac version of Civ IV: Warlords is in progress at Aspyr Media.
A great way to use your warlords is in taking over a neighboring civilization. There are six new civilizations in the expansion, each with a unique unit and building. Pounding your enemies into submission can lead to another new element to the game, vassal states. These are basically sub-governments or states that owe their existence to another government or state. This might not always work in your favor though, as states that you’re working on taking over might become a vassal state of another state, and suddenly you’ll find yourself facing two enemies instead of one.
The expansion also includes eight new scenarios and three new buildings, too. I’ve played through about half of the new scenarios and they’re certainly quite a bit of fun. If you enjoyed Civ IV, Warlords should be at least as fun.
