The State Of Shadowbane

Stray Bullet Games has posted the latest State of Shadowbane article, this time dealing with the future of the MMORPG title. In addition to patches, Stray Bullet plans to focus on Shadowbane's strengths. Future changes will include improved player vs. player combat, more emphasis on the skill of players rather than the skills of characters, and adjustments to "buff" durations.
Another change I am looking at is in making the player actually pay attention more to the game screen, and not just bang a few buttons. Being aware of your surroundings is essential in combat. There are some current mechanics and features I consider “crutches,” things that make auto pilot fighting too easy. Some of them have been around a long time, and we’re so used to that many will be against the changes without even trying them out. For instance, we will be removing all non-allies and group members from the Local Map; the only players you see on it are Nation, Guild, and Group members. In addition, we are looking at removing the slash command /target, causing players to actually find their target instead of just running an attack script they made 10 minutes before going into battle. To read the rest of the article click on the link below.

Madness, you say? Let me reassure you of a few things.
Changes like these will be extensively evaluated on the Test Server before they ever go live. They may not work as well as we hope; if they don’t we’ll keep them off live until they do. In Patch 16 we ended up holding one of my favorite features because they just didn’t work as we’d hoped. Then again, the radar and targeting changes just might make combat more interactive and enjoyable.
