Blizzard Entertainment has released a new service for users of World of Warcraft. The Blizzard Launcher will serve as a portal to WoW, offering the latest game related news and security features including a virus and cheat detector.

Blizzard Launcher features:

News & community/support updates - Stay up to date on the latest World of Warcraft topics.

Play button - One click starts World of Warcraft.

Automatic Trojan/cheat program scan - If a Trojan or 3rd-party cheat program is detected, a notification will appear with additional helpful information.

Support button - Provides quick access to the World of Warcraft support Web site.

Public test button - Runs the World of Warcraft test realm client, when the test realms are live.

Blizzard has also released a FAQ explaining the new Launcher's features and the reasons the company feels scanning for cheat programs is necessary. The FAQ also gives instructions on bypassing the Launcher if the user isn't interested in using the new features.
Q: Why does the Blizzard Launcher say I am using a 3rd party cheat program?
A: Blizzard Entertainment is attempting to keep the World of Warcraft game service fair and free from players who use “cheats” or “hacks.” To further battle cheating in World of Warcraft, you will be notified if you are running a program that is deemed by Blizzard Entertainment to be a 3rd -party cheat program that violates the Terms of Use agreement. We have found that players do not always realize that a cheat program has been installed on the computer on which they’re playing, especially in the case of Internet gaming cafés and single-computer households. The Blizzard Launcher’s virus/cheat scan does not transmit any information to Blizzard. The main purpose of this scan is to notify you if you have something installed on the computer you’re using that may put your account information or your access to World of Warcraft at risk.
