CodeWeavers Announces Support For Intel-based Macs
9:45 AM | Eddie Park | Comment on this story
CodeWeavers has announced its intention to support Intel-based Macs in the future. Best known for their Windows-to-Linux development, CodeWeavers plans on expanding their line to Macs, with applications like CrossOver providing the means to run Windows applications.
A recent MacWorld article notes CrossOver's underpinnings:
CodeWeavers is a corporate backer of Wine, open source software that lets Windows applications run on Linux systems not through emulation, but by implementing a compatibility layer that provides implementations of the Dynamically Linked Libraries (DLLs) Windows application depend on. (Wine itself is a recursive acronym that stands for "Wine Is Not an Emulator.") CrossOver is a proprietary version of Wine. While not entirely game-relevant, moves like this show the possibilities that have been speculated on ever since the announcement of Intel-based Macs. Whether the shift will prove beneficial or harmful to the Mac gaming market remains to be seen.
