Are Games Too Complex?

Clayton, a blogger over at the gaming site The Game Chair has posted a musing entitled "Games Are Supposed To Be Fun, Right?". In the post, Clayton talks about the complexity of today's games, and the criticisms being leveled at Nintendo for continuing to take a stance of keeping game concepts simple and accessible to the masses, instead of developing complex gaming concepts.
First hand experiences lead Clayton to believe that games like Halo 2 and Grand Theft Auto, while very popular games, can have a tendency to turn non-gamers away with their complexities:
Just a week ago my wife and I had our friend Jesse over. She was marveling at my video game collection, looking at all the old NES and Nintendo 64 games, and reminiscing about the few games that she had played when she was a kid. She noticed Halo and Grand Theft Auto and said that she had seen her college buddies playing them, but that she had never felt interest in playing them herself. We had no better luck convincing her to play them with us. Her response was, “I tried once and I just got my *** kicked.”So, is simpler better? Head over to The Game Chair and post your comments, or head to our very own game boards and discuss it.
