HaloUT Mod Gets Go-Ahead

Readers may remember an article back in February regarding Project Torlan. A mod for Unreal Tournament 2004, Torlan's aim is a total conversion based on the Halo universe, including characters, vehicles, maps, and weapons.
Of course, given that Halo is currently a corporate-owned entity, several readers pointed out the possible legal ramifications of creating such a mod. Thankfully, the folks at Project Torlan have recently received verification regarding what they can and cannot do regarding both Halo and Halo 2 usage and conversions.
They have received the OK to continue with work on HaloUT, including the right to use content extracted from Halo for the PC. While they can't extract from Halo 2, they are allowed to build likenesses from scratch:
We CAN make Halo2 stuff as long as we didn't extract it from the XBox! As long as we do ALL the work, model, texture and code and DO NOT charge a cent for our content we can do Halo2 content. MS is HUNTING people that are ripping Halo2 content and moving to another platform or modding it for XBox.Given this information, Project Torlan is expected to forge ahead with the HaloUT conversion. Those interested in checking out the currently available material, which includes weapons packs, characters, and so forth, can download them directly from the Project Torlan site.
