An open-source title recently brought to our attention is Scourge - Heroes of Lesser Reknown. A work in progress, Scourge takes a common RPG formula and has a bit of fun with it, putting players in control of some down-and-out adventurers who must resort to janitorial duties in order to make a living.
Our heros are hired by overlords, evil sorcerers and underworld bosses to exterminate pests occupying old dungeons, haunted towers, and other future centers of world domination. While working for the daily mutton, group members battle alcohol, decrese of self- confidence and loss of integrity. It is an epic battle of mental and psychic proportions, to which I'm sure most players can relate.Scourge boasts features such as randomly generated dungeons, multiple missions per level, and a party of 4 controllable characters. It's also completely free, and those interested in trying it out can find download and installation instructions at the official Scourge site.
