IMG Previews World Of Warcraft: Warlords Of Draenor
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Inside Mac Games' Ted Bade has posted a new preview of Blizzard Entertainment's upcoming expansion for its popular fantasy MMO World of Warcraft. Scheduled for a November 11 release Warlords of Draenor, the fifth expansion for the game, will send players to Draenor "at a pivotal moment in history to fight against and alongside legends from Warcraft’s brutal past."

Here's an excerpt:

Your garrison becomes an alternative home base for you. It has a flight point, an Inn, a command center, and various profession and other vendors, and all the stuff of a small town. You get a special hearthstone that brings you back to your garrison. This is in addition to the normal one you can set to whatever place makes the most sense for what you are doing. You’ll need to get back to your garrison on occasion, to continue the building process as well as to turn in certain quests.

Another method of gaining resources for yourself and your garrison revolves around finding certain NPCs that work for you. What is pretty cool about these followers is that when they are sent out on a mission they go off and do it without your help, beyond selecting a follower and sending them on their way. If they succeed, you get the rewards for completing the mission. This usually includes both resources for your garrison and some item for you. The gaming skill required here is to look at what the mission is about and determine which of your followers is best suited to succeed at completing the mission. Obviously, early on, with only one follower, there isn’t much choice. But there are a number of followers to gain, which you can see listed in the follower window (they remain “greyed out” until you gain them).

Another retro-classic game title from Tommo, Sword of the Samurai is available now for purchase and download at Mac Game Store. The game gives players the chance to return to ancient Japan for a role-playing, action-adventure simulation of combat, statesmanship, and intrigue.

Enter Japan in the Age of Warring States. At the center of this role-playing, action-adventure simulation of combat, statesmanship and intrigue, you are a samurai warrior struggling for Honor. More important than life itself, Honor is crucial to achieving your ultimate goal: unifying the country under your noble rule.

In Sword of the Samurai, you will be part of the culture of feudal Japan, and you must learn to live by its rules. To succeed as a samurai, you must think like the samurai. Learn when to leave your sword in its sheath, when to draw it - and what to do with it once it’s drawn. You will fight duels, lead troops on the battlefields, and defend your family against assassins and kidnappers. If you are courageous and honorable, you may advance to become the head of your clan, and warlord of your province. If you master diplomacy and generalship, and outmaneuver your rivals, you may even become Shogun - absolute ruler of Japan. But remember that in all cultures power corrupts - and those who seek absolute power don’t always play by the rules.

Features:

  • Unite all 48 warring provinces in common allegiance to you, and earn the title of Shogun, military ruler of all Japan.
  • Computer-controlled opponents make decisions based on your actions - and on the actions of other rival characters.

Project: Gorgon - Kickstarting A New Kind Of MMO
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 5 comments

An IMG reader has informed us of a new Kickstarter campaign to fund the creation of Project: Gorgon, a new 3D fantasy MMORPG for Mac, Windows, and eventually Linux PCs. The game combines elements of both classic and modern MMOs and is designed for "players who want to explore a deep world with complex game systems and a tight-knit community that is friendly enough to actually chat while they group." An alpha version of Project: Gorgon is available to download now.

Emerging From An MMO Dark Age

"We already have plenty of MMOs," you may be thinking to yourself. "This is just another generic fantasy game. I've already played this."

No, you haven't. And unless you've been playing MMOs for over a decade, you may not even know what you're missing!

A decade ago, World of Warcraft came out and changed the MMO industry forever. It's an amazing game, and completely worthy of its success, but it had a nasty side effect on the MMO industry: other game companies saw the success this game had, and suddenly every business plan was to "be the next World of Warcraft." (I was there, making MMOs. It was a weird time.)

Each new MMO tried to copy as much of WoW as possible, assuming that was the secret to capturing the same audience. And now, a decade later, the term "MMO" is almost synonymous with this sort of directed MMO experience. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun experience! But it's only one possible kind of MMO.

If you've been playing MMOs for the better part of the last decade, you might be bored of them. You might naturally assume you'd seen everything there is to see in the genre. Fortunately for you, you couldn't be more wrong.

Go And Find Adventure

Originally, each new MMO found its own balance between the two extreme design ideas of "tight, directed game”, or “immersive, explorable world". After World of Warcraft, MMOs all seem to use the same answer. But we answer this basic dichotomy in a totally different way.

Project: Gorgon heavily rewards exploration. Go poke in corners and see what you find! Entire dungeons, hidden NPCs, all kinds of items, even entire skills and abilities... all waiting for you to discover.

Don't worry if that sounds intimidating! There'll be a solid tutorial, of course (and you can see an early version in the game right now). And to help get you started, we'll have "directed storylines" that are akin to classic MMO quest lines, and help tell the overarching story. But once you're comfortable, we hope you'll go exploring – because most of Project: Gorgon doesn't have signposts.

Immersive World Through Game Mechanics

When you play Project: Gorgon, we want you to feel like you're immersed in a whole new virtual world. Rather than try to manage this with just some pretty graphics and excessive backstory, though, we’ve designed the game with dozens of gameplay features that make you feel like you're really there, interacting with the world, such as:

  • If you're on fire, you can jump in a lake to put it out. That kind of real world touch can have a subtle effect on your strategies – especially when you’re fighting a fire mage!
  • You can drop items on the ground, and other players can pick them up. What's so great about that? Imagine laying down a trail of literal (virtual) breadcrumbs to lure one of your friends into the woods.
  • Shopkeepers really keep inventory, so you can buy the items other players sold them. Want to help out the newbies? Sell your cast-off uber weapons to the shopkeep in the newbie zone and watch them go to town.
  • Each non-player character (NPC) you meet has their own goals and interests, and rewards players that choose to be their friend.
  • You can inscribe messages on items, write books, even leave notes for other players. Make your name as an in-game poet, or just record your best kills on your sword.
And lots more subtle but very immersive stuff like that. These aren't the big features that make an MMO, but all of them combined make for a very unique world feel.
The Project: Gorgon Kickstarter is currently in progress and will be successful if $100,000 is gathered before the campaign ends on September 27.

Mac Gamer HQ Reviews Tomb Raider
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Mac Gamer HQ recently posted a new review of Tomb Raider from Feral Interactive. Developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix for PC and consoles, Tomb Raider is the series reboot that tells the story of how a young woman becomes the extraordinary Lara Croft, Tomb Raider.

Square Enix took a brave decision to reboot Tomb Raider. Instead of continuing the theme of exploring exotic locations, a grittier story takes us back to a time when a younger Lara Croft is shipwrecked on Yamatai, an island close to Japan. When she wakes up, she finds herself trapped in a tribal cave and she escapes, only to find that her friends are scattered over the island inhabited by a cult. Although the game is focused on survival, there is a touch of exploration as Lara uncovers the mysteries of the island and its fascinating history.

As Lara explores the island and picks up items and completes quests, she picks up experience points, and with those, you can upgrade her skills. Gamers who prefer to fight it out for resources can upgrade her combat skills, and those players who like to explore their surroundings for resources can upgrade her survival skills. This customisability adds another layer to the gameplay, allowing you to play the game as you wish to.

Portal 2 Comes To MGS
6:00 AM | IMG News | Comment on this story

Mac Game Store has added Valve's Portal 2 first person action puzzler to its list of titles available for purchase and download. The game introduces a new cast of characters to the single player storyline, new puzzle elements, and a two player cooperative mode

Portal 2 draws from the award-winning formula of innovative gameplay, story, and music that earned the original Portal over 70 industry accolades and created a cult following.

The single-player portion of Portal 2 introduces a cast of dynamic new characters, a host of fresh puzzle elements, and a much larger set of devious test chambers. Players will explore never-before-seen areas of the Aperture Science Labs and be reunited with GLaDOS, the occasionally murderous computer companion who guided them through the original game.

The game’s two-player cooperative mode features its own entirely separate campaign with a unique story, test chambers, and two new player characters. This new mode forces players to reconsider everything they thought they knew about portals. Success will require them to not just act cooperatively, but to think cooperatively.

Features:

  • Extensive single player: Featuring next generation gameplay and a wildly-engrossing story.
  • Complete two-person co-op: Multiplayer game featuring its own dedicated story, characters, and gameplay.
  • Advanced physics: Allows for the creation of a whole new range of interesting challenges, producing a much larger but not harder game.
  • Original music.
  • Massive sequel: The original Portal was named 2007's Game of the Year by over 30 publications worldwide.
  • Editing Tools: Portal 2 editing tools will be included.
