Avernum 2: Crystal Souls Officially Announced
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 1 comment

Spiderweb Software has officially announced Avernum 2: Crystal Souls will be released for Mac and Windows PCs later this year, and for iPad in early 2015. The complete remake of Avernum 2 will continue the story of the underworld Avernites and the war against their oppressors.

The end has come. Years ago, your people were imprisoned in the underworld, doomed to end their lives in the darkness. Then that was not enough. Your captors have invaded your caves, determined to kill you all. They are winning the war.

The surface world is commanded by the tyrannical Empire, the eternal power that controls all known lands. Everyone who spoke out, misbehaved, or didn’t fit in was cast into the dark, volcanic pits of Avernum, far below the surface. They were meant to die. Instead, these exiles survived, gained power, and struck back. They assassinated the lord of the Empire.

Now the Empire will have revenge. They have invaded Avernum, seizing cave after cave and destroying your people. Your land needs a hero, and it needs it now. If you can’t find a way to stop them, and soon, you are all doomed.

Avernum 2: Crystal Souls is an epic fantasy role-playing adventure in a unique, massive world, full of strange caves, cunning dungeons, and the alien inhabitants of the underworld. Fight to complete up to three game-winning quests. Explore a massive nation of tunnels and caverns, seeking over 100 towns and dungeons. Master over 60 spells and battle disciplines and hunt for hundreds of magical artifacts. Avernum 2: Crystal Souls is a total, ground-up rewrite of the award-winning indie hit Avernum 2. It will be open for adventuring in Q4, 2014.

Deadhold MOBA/RTS Hybrid Announced
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 2 comments

Development on Deadhold, a new action real-time strategy title, has been announced. Featuring a combination of traditional real-time strategy with multiplayer online action battle arena gameplay, the game will focus on squad customization, positioning, and tactics rather than resource collection and base building. In Deadhold players take the role of commander for a force of humans, frost giants, and goblins battling an evil menace.

Doug Zartman, former Bungie PR Director, said, "I'm excited by Deadhold's ambition to bridge the gap between tactical RTS and MOBA. The careful maneuvering, formations, use of terrain and unit specialties that players loved in Myth, plus the frenetic back and forth of a game like LoL promises to be a powerful combination indeed. Cannot wait to play this."

Combining elements of traditional real-time tactics games with the action real time strategy (ARTS) and multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) genres, the game features a dark fantasy Viking inspired setting with different races and abilities, a stoic Norse empire, exploding Goblins, enraged Frost Giants and a horde of mutated horrors.

Deadhold eschews base building and resource collection and instead focuses on squad customization, positioning and tactics. Combat is easy to play but hard to master. The initial focus of development will be on multiplayer and developing the core gameplay systems for maximum fun and robustness; co op and single player gameplay will follow.

Gratuitous Space Battles 2 Trailer Released
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Positech Games has released a new trailer for the upcoming Gratuitous Space Battles 2. The original GSB space battle simulation focused on spectacular space battles, allowing players to design ships, arrange them into fleets, and jump into the action. The sequel will stay true to the formula, adding an improved engine, multiple monitor support, and 3 new classes of ship.

GSB2 is a continuation of my fantasy of making this come to life. There are various questions answered on the placeholder website here, but let me summarize. GSB2 will be bigger, bolder, better and have more cool effects than you can shake a laser gun at. It will have a truly gratuitous user-interface. it will lovingly embrace the possibilities of twin 2560 res monitors. It will have a super-cool feature I haven’t announced yet. It will be a PC-first game, pure and simple, and it will be in your hands either late 2014 or early 2015. And you can play it in London at the Eurogamer Expo in September.

GSB2 will be available on PC, MAc or Linux, but is not being targeted at IOS or other tablets, as first and foremost, this is a desktop experience ideal for people with gratuitously big monitors. The game is designed to support 5120 resolutions stretched over multiple monitors, regardless of video card. Our aim is for the game to scale down nicely to older PCs, but provide a suitable experience for PC enthusiasts with insane setups!

GSB2 will retain the same hands-off gameplay of the original title, with players designing fleets of ships to battle it out against vast alien fleets. The game will support the same challenge-based asynchronous online combat of the original. Like GSB1, the new game will be a 2D experience, but with a substantially improved engine that gives a much-more 3D and immersive feel.
