Macs And MMOs: The Perfect Match
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 3 comments

Mac Gamer HQ has posted a new editorial targeting some of the MMO titles out there for Mac users. The article features well known titles such as World of Warcraft and The Elder Scrolls Online, as well as lesser known games like Puzzle Pirates and Minions of Mirth.

Star Trek Online (Open Beta)

The first time I ran the original beta for Star Trek Online, I wasn’t impressed. But then Cryptic went free to play and released an OS X client, giving me good reasons to give it another shot. I’m glad I did.

After an entire weekend cruising the solar system and rescuing emissaries from forgotten planets, this was not the same game I tested a few years ago. Cryptic changed the entire tutorial part of the beginning of the game and inserted a real story line for new players. The ability to give the players a spaceship and command their own decisions makes STO something MMO fans need to try at least once.

Something to keep in mind, I’m in no way a Star Trek fan but that doesn’t prevent me from absolutely loving this game and everything about it. The 3rd person rescue reconnaissance missions, the ship battles, the leveling system, and the redesign of the entire game from that original beta – all well needed. Best of all, I still haven’t spent a dime, even though I really want a Romulan Warbird…

Command Control Escape Reviews Hitman: Absolution
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Command Control Escape has posted a new review of Feral Interactive's stealth-action game Hitman: Absolution - Elite Edition. Developed by Io-Interactive and published by Square Enix for PC and consoles, Hitman: Absolution - Elite Edition brings Hitman’s charismatic Agent 47 to the Mac platform for the first time.

As linear as the game is, it's crying out to be replayed multiple times. Each objective level gives you a score as you play, and typically has a dozen or so mutually exclusive ways to complete it in the form of "challenges". For stages requiring assassination, many of the challenges are to assassinate the target in a number of specific ways, but there are also things like finding specific disguises and collectibles within each level. It seems a bit strange that the game just tells you upfront what these challenges are when you start each level, but they're just vague enough to leave you to figure out the details in most cases. Completing the various challenges gives you a score bonus, which is combined with various modifiers (points added for objectives completed, points deducted for killing people that are not targets or for being spotted, and so on) to give you your final score for the level (a particularly nice feature, in the Steam edition at least, is that it will show the scores of your friends and world averages at the start of each level).

Divinity: Original Sin Gets Later Release Date
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Larian Studios has announced that the release date for the upcoming, co-op fantasy RPG, Divinity: Original Sin, has changed from June 20 to June 30 to give the developers more time to polish the final product. Among other things the game will feature an isometric view point, party-based gameplay, turn-based combat, choice and consequence, character and party development, and a large interactive world filled with characters and items.

While Divinity: Original Sin has been going through rigorous testing thanks to a huge community playing on Steam Early Access, there are still a few more finishing touches required before launch. The team wants to deliver the best possible game at release, rather than a game they're not 100% happy with, and will use the extra time to add voice-overs for a range of characters, as well as a number of bug fixes to make for a well-polished experience.

Players who have purchased a copy of the game via Steam Early Access will still be able to enjoy it until release, and Larian apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause players who have been patiently waiting for Original Sin's release.

About Divinity: Original Sin

Divinity: Original Sin goes back to the roots of memorable and beloved cRPGs, featuring isometric,  party-based gameplay; turn-based combat; gripping dialogues; choice and consequence; enthralling story; profound character and party development; a big interactive world filled with characters and items; free exploration... There is one main goal, and how you get there is completely up to you. Of course, everything is more fun with a friend and so is Original Sin: drop-in, drop-out multiplayer takes care of that, both online and locally.

Key features:

  • Become part of a reactive, living and open world. Explore diverse environments, find myriad creatures and tons of desirable items.
  • Experience gripping, party and turn-based combat. Manipulate the environment and use skill & spell combos.
  • Play in co-op multiplayer and engage in co-op dialogues. Shape your relationships with your partner that will influence the game.
  • Unravel a deep and epic story, set in the early days of Rivellon. Taking place well before Divine Divinity and The Dragon Knight Saga, Divinity: Original Sin presents you with a familiar world in another era.
  • Classless system lets you shape your character any way you want. Endless item interaction and combinations take things to another level of freedom.
  • Create your own adventures and share them online. With Original Sin comes the powerful toolset used by the game's designers.

Wasteland 2: Rangers Vs Scorpitron
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

InXile Entertainment has offered a new visual from the upcoming Wasteland 2 RPG, this time offering a scene constructed using the game's engine and depicting a battle between rangers and the deadly Scorpitron mech. A sequel to the classic post-apocalyptic RPG of the 80's, Wasteland 2 will be a top down, turn-based, tactical RPG that the developers promise will "stay true to its roots."

Wasteland 2 is the direct sequel to the first ever post-apocalyptic computer RPG. The original Wasteland was the inspiration for the FALLOUT series of games, and the first RPG to allow players to split parties for tactical considerations, to face players with moral choices, and to make them deal with the consequences of their actions. It was the first to provide far more than the one-key-for-one-lock style of puzzle solving. It was groundbreaking, which is why IGN named it one of the top 25 PC games of all time, Computer Gaming World named it the Adventure Game of the year in 1988, and it was short-listed for inclusion in the Smithsonian Institution’s current “Art of the Computer Game” exhibition.

Wasteland was set in a dangerous, post-apocalyptic world in the American Southwest. Over the course of adventures rangers would receive promotions, acquire new skills and equipment, then face new challenges with outcomes that changed depending on the strategy used to defeat them. The game featured a strong storyline which required painful decisions by players; and a storyline that allowed for maximum re-playability. Wasteland 2, with your participation and insights, will recapture all that and provide more. It'll finally be the game worthy to be a Wasteland sequel, as challenging and rewarding as the original, with all added capacity and dazzle of games today.
